Default How good is your HMI (human machine interface)

    Hi all

Even though we are all here for the Vec/Sig - Iím kind of thinking that a lot of you will be car buffs and keep up to date with whatís going on in the rest of the industry!

Iím currently doing some research on which cars have the best HMI, with regard to the IVIS systems. Or to put it in English! - Which cars have the easiest to operate in-vehicle communication systems?

    These systems include operating:
All aspects of the audio system (including integrating and using ipods etc)
    Phone
    Heating/AC settings
sat nav - (but not using it)
    DVD etc etc

Basically anything that is not a driving aid Ė so Iím not looking at how to use sat nav systems or anything that assists the driver in the driving task.

What Iím trying to find out is what you think is good and bad about systems you have used. It does not have to be the whole system that you liked - For example you liked the way of accessing a certain carís radio menus but hated the feel or location of the buttons on the stereo or steering wheel.

What would you like to see as part of these systems in the future? Eg keyless ignition also sets up radio/heating preferencesÖÖÖ.

Also any pos/neg comments about aftermarket audio systems would be welcome Ė who do you think are the market leaders in technology and/or ease of use?

    Cheers

The secret will all this gadgets is how simple they are...or at least how simple it is to use them....if they are complicated they are worth nothing. IMO

I question the whole thing to be honest.

Do we really need personal heating / ventilation / seating positions that automatically adjust ?? No I don't think we do.

I also think we are putting FAR TOO much technology and COST into a CAR. It is there to drive around and move people and things, it is not to be a mobile entertainment centre.

I say go back to basics, but make it good quality and low cost and remove unnecessary features that are worthless gadgets.

The voice activation on the Pug is ok, but you have to use specific phrases (which means you have to remember what they are).

I haven't bothered. It's easier to press the button by the steering wheel.

I agree with Ste. The more gadgets, bells & whistles the manufactureres add to a car, the higher the price gets hiked, and the more things there are to go wrong.

I HATE with a passion things like auto dimming mirrors, rain sensitive wipers and automatic headlights.

I'm quite capable of deciding for myself if i want my wipers, lights, heating on etc. Scrap the lot and put some extra money into building engines that don't break.

The controls on the wifes Note are VERY user friendly, she can use them, whcih for a total technophobe is some statement!

Then again, the Note was designed for my missus, auto wipers, auto lights, PDC, auto climate control.....the only thing it doesnt do it auto drive!

cheers for these - interesting info!

as has been said these things have got to be easy and intuative to use otherwise no-one uses them - one of the points about I Drive was that if you take a while to learn it it is very good - but it got slammed by Journo's (they after all only have the car for a day or so!) so it got bad press - that filters down to everyone then!

but it was not intuative so that is the problem!

after having climate on my Sig - I just set the temp and left it on auto all the time I had it - I.e. once set I didnt change it -winter/summer! (other than pressing the rapid demist option in winter!) - do other people do the same??or do you always change the temp settings

In our Rav 4 it only has aircon (on or off) so I am constantly changing the temp as its all or nothing
