It had a diagnostix box on for about 6 weeks before it went. I doubt it had anything to do with it though as the car is very rarely driven hard.

I use it for work doing 30,000 miles a year so if I drive it hard, the more fuel etc is used and I make less money.

It may have lasted a while longer but I did not want to risk breaking down anywhere and my dealer understood this and got the OK from Vauxhall to do the job.

It was getting pretty bad in 3rd.

    Well ... torque kills ...
But 6 weeks tuned shouldnt get the box bad if it already wasnt on the go ...

3rd would make sense since turbocars often have lower boostlevels in 1st and 2nd to save the clutch and box.

Its a common fault on Saab-boxes to get bad sync.

My Zafira runs 270 lb/ft from an F23 with no problems.

But I have since heard that the F40 is not as good as first thought.

The F23 seems to be a better box, yes ....
Know of people who have pretty high tuned cars with stock F23 and clutch with no prob.
( And i have a F23 in my current car, Astra Coupe Turbo )

The F40 on the other hand seems to be a weak link ...
Strange that Saab havent learned their lesson, it aint exactly
    a new problem ...
In the long run it will cost them to change boxes ...

Matt - What was the first signs your F40 gearbox was on the way out and at what milage?? - Did the dealer agree to change on your first visit to him with no problems or did you have to put up a fight???

    Cheers

Mine started to feel a little notchy at about 45,000 miles. I went to my dealer and the guy who runs the tech shop took it for a drive and agreed it was not quite right but asked if I minded running it fora few more 000 miles to see how it went. I of course agreed. I don't see any point in being demanding as it gets you know where.

In the meantime he logged the fault on their records, at 49,900 miles I went back as 3rd was getting hard to disengage, they said, box replacement is authorised and on order. They also gave me a car there and then so I did not run the risk of breaking down.

To be fair I never have to argue about anything with my dealer, they know me very well and also know I would not complain about something if it was not actually faulty.

The new box though is a dream, so far as to say, maybe better than the original when it was new.
