    Default 1.9CDTi Engine oil?

Somthing strange is going on, I have been over to Huddersfield earlier and on the way home the oil level light came on, so I drove to where I was going and checked the oil.

How the hell does the dipstick work? I know normally I have checked all my other cars and have looked at this one in the past.
it is a springy flexable one, with a crossed section that is pressed flat about 1cm up from the bottom. I assume that the bottom of the flat section is minimum and the top of the flat section is maximum?

The level after about 7 minutes is at about 2mm from the max? so I don't think it needs any oil. my sister has borrowed the decent camera so I can take photos. I have just been out and bought some oil, I wish I had a drill and could get the stuff out of the ground fully synthetic 4L for £37 ouch.

Any way I dont want to put any in as I dont want to over fill. i think I will call round to a garrage tomorrow. anyone any advice?

    Thanks
    John

Has the flat section not got two notches in it?

if it is registering on the dipstick, then it could well be either a faulty sender unit or an ECU fault...but either way, avoid driving it till VX have had a look at it as you could well have an oil starvation issue..time to use the warranty recovery..

    Warrenty recovery?
I bought the car in October 2nd hand from the local VX network Q section, It was stamped as serviced before I picked it up at 13000 miles by the dealer. I have another garrage stamp in the book when I took it to another garrage just to get them check it all over after 3 months ish where they also carried out a small service oil and levels etc. but hey a £19k car (when new) should come with some sort or warrently and not go wrong after 13 months and have no type of warrenty?

any input would be a help.

How old is the car? The manufacture covers them for 3 years, 60k.

The flat is as you say though, the max and min. Ideally, the level should be taken after the engine has run and then sat for 5 minutes (as you did) and the level should be right in the middle of max and min not at either extreem.

If the car is an 06 as your profile suggests, then it will still be covered under
    the 3yrs manufacturers warranty.

Well how much of a t**t did I look. the guy checked the oil and it was low just covering the blob bit and not touching the flatened section.

I have topped it up with the oil I bought and I will see how it goes I will keep checking the oil level for a few weeks.
