Advice on drilling out bolts

I went to get my rear tyers changed today at a local garage, in all it took them 2 hours to fit the tyers to my wheels, at this point i was getting concerned about there experence,any way they managed to snap off one of the wheel bolts so the thread is still left in the hub They said i could take it down tomorow and they will drill it out, but i am not to sure they know what they are doing i would rather do it my self if it is not to difficult,has any one done this before advice would be greatly appreciated

Well mate you can get it out by useing a small drill bit about 5mm and drill a hole in the centre of the old bolt then tap that hole 6mm useing a bolt then put a couple of nuts on the 6 mm bolt and screw it in and lock it with the nuts. Then hopefully you can remove the bolt and the stud will come out with it.

If the garage does do the job make sure they DONT tap the wheel bolt hole out. I would not accept this as they could be makeing the hole a bit bigger. And the wheel bolt maybe can come loose.

I would get them to replace the disc. Tell them your not happy about the disc being work'd on and then you driveing with it.
They will say the bolt was allready tight and they had to snap it to get the wheel off. But just say you should have show'n me it before you snapped it. They will have done it while putting them on with a windy gun.

Well this is all I can suggest, you need to take the wheel off, then use a camping butane torch to heat up around the broken stud and see if it will move then, has any of it stayed out or is it flush with the hub? if you can get an impact driver and try to get a X on the centre of the stud and that way you might be able to unscrew it when it's hot with a good quality screwdriver.

You can get Kits which are designed to remove screws and things like that with rounded heads - personally I wouldn't want anyone drilling anything near my wheel hubs

It's not a difficult job you should be able to do it and with the wheels off it should be a doddle. I did the same thing and got round it as follows.

first spray on some WD 40 then drill a hole with sharp drill bit, screw in a self tapper, if it starts to rotate as you tighten it up it should be OK to unscrew which should take the bolt with it .

try pressing a drill against it but run it in reverse, sometimes the reverse action can extract even a really tight bolt. Otherwise drill a small hole and screw in a stud extractor, they are reverse thread so the tighter it screws in the more force it puts on the stuck bolt to come off.

you could always tell them you want to take the car to VX after all they are admiting blam arn`t they?

thanks all for the advice, i have managed to borrow some screw extratrators, they are like a fat drill bit with i reverse thread , hopefully these will work

Tap the extractor in gently then keep it square when you turn it, but be carefull not to put too much force on it, they are very strong, but I have known them to break when we use them at work, some WD 40 on the thread would be a good idea too, I hope you get the stud out ok.
