the 'DIRECT' makes a few more BHP and is far more economic with the fuel than it's previous 'brother'..

    Yep, agree with that Mark.
I had a 2.2 Direct before my 3.0 and is a excellant engine. More torquey than the old 2.2 and got around 29mpg around town and 36mpg on a run. People on here with old 2.2 have reported mpg in the low 20's.

    Thumbs up

I can't speak for the previous 2.2 but I have owned a 2.2 Direct now for over a year. In terms of pace, you'll be shown a clean pair of heels by the diesels but if you're doing mostly motorway miles like me (I don't do enough to justify the diesel) , then it is a smooth and relatively torquey motor.

MPG during constant pounding of M3/A303 will hit mid-30's according to the trip computer and checked by calcs on refill!! We tend to use the wife's company car for town trips so can't really comment on this.

Really ? The diesels are faster than the petrols ? Always thought it was the other way round ? How much of a speed difference are we talking ?

    The comparable diesel is a 1.9 150
When I had my 2.2 Direct my mate also had a 1.9 150. On one occiaion we both pulled out of a junction and I was in front and floored it. My mate said he had to hold back else he'd of been in my back window. I dont think theres a lot in it, but the 1.9 150 has a slight edge.
I dont think the old 2.2 would stand as much chance though.

My 2.2 direct is meant ot be 155BHP but i would dispute that, had a little rip today with a work mate in his Fiesta ST (150BHP) and he was getting away from me quite well (i know it is a smaller car).

I hope to pop to my old work place and test it on the rolling road tomorrow morning if its not in use.

Interesting you say that as this guy dont recon much to the ST

Mind you your car weighs around 1427kgs and the Fiesta is 1137kg so thats:
    108bhp/tonne vs 131bhp/tonne

You can see who is going to win

I'm sure my non-direct 2.2 weighs over 1550kg and it drinks fuel so badly that we had to get a smaller car for the shorter journeys. As a whole the car feels slow with very poor throttle response (due to drive by wire me thinks). On rare occasions (normally around 11.5 degree) it feels smooth and quicker. Remember that 150bhp is nothing for the weight so you shouldn't expect grunt, true the CDTi does pull with the same bhp but it has loads more torque and is delivered in one big hit.

The SRi gear box isn't close ratio either which is another ar$e and could have been closed up abit to give a sporter feel but this may have meant even more fuel lol. Racing the car you do forget its an SRi unlike the old motors which felt spirited.

Can't help with the direct but it sounds like people like it.

Well different engines put their power to the floor in different ways.
I was really shocked this afternoon, having just turned of a dual i had a Focus ST bomb straight up the rear,i had rolled off the dual in a lazy 4th.
Of course i really wanted to see the ST do it's stuff so i dropped into 3rd(which by the way i find fantastic in my 2.2 direct) and instantly put pulled away, and to my utter amazment over half a mile before we hit the lights i stayed away, maintaining the same distance between us,how nuts is that?
I mean it goes wihtout saying i wouldn't have been able to keep that up on a longer run with him,but i was really suprised, and i instantly thought back to an earlier thread,
