I'm am involved in this from a commerical perspective as we are a service provider to the oil testing business. Basically bio-fuels will never replace minerals, no matter how much the tree huggers want it - the capacity simply isn't there for it to be anything other than a minor player (e.g. Malaysia's palm oil exports are about 1mio US Bbls a month and the global fuel consumption is about 80 mio US Bbls a day).
Almost every tonne of palm oil robs the earth of a large area of rain forest, destroying the local ecosystem and contributing to global warming. Add to this the costs of transport........
Every tonne of soya or rapeseed oil produced to burn in vehicles is one less tonne of grain etc to feed the world. A generality, I know, but think about it.
i will not be using this stuff when i do get my diesel then.
The law has changed and you can now produce up to 2500 litres of biofuel yourself tax free. I certainly wouldnt put chip fat or a bottle of sunflower oil in my tank but many do...see here.................

Been running a 3.0 CDTI Signum and a pair of 3.0 CDTi Elites on 50% recycled cooking oil for around a year now. 80p litre. In summer I run them around 80% on recycled. Done aroudn 50K across all three cars this way. Never had a problem when being serviced. Hope it stays this way.
Out of intrest, how can they monitor not having to pay the congestion charge if running on bio-diesel?
I have a warning on the inside of my fuel flap telling me not to put biofuels in it ...
Ahh - but for a diesel, Dr Rudolf Diesel did invent the diesel to run on peanut oil to begin with.
