Question Should I get A DE-CAT made up?

For my 2.2 DTI, it already has a system from the cat, but I want an extra bit of power! I have been told that Diesels do not really need a cat.

SO far I have got a single exit system, Tuner box and a panel filter and when I had it tested with just the tuner box it was running 157 bhp.

If diesels didn't need a cat, then why is it there costing VX money to supply, validate, fit etc??

If emissions reg could be met without it, then VX would save the time effort and money and not bother.

It will be an MOT failure to de-cat.

Don't do it, morally wrong IMO.

    lol

My mate has never had a CAT on any of his Lotus Elise's. He just slips the MOT guy 30 quid and a different car is analysed for emissions. I never said it was right!

whist it is against type approval on emissions to decat a diesel, it's perfectlt acceptable as the cat has no real effect on particulate emmisions and that is all that is currently measured at the MOT testing station..things may change there however..

thats what I thought I was told before... it wont start spitting flames out of the exhaust tho will it? surely not on a diesel!! also ya reckon i'll gain 5-10bhp?

nope, you won't be spitting flames, and yes it will feel a LITTLE more spritely, but don't look for 20HP out of it..

i look after 2 family cars that are diesels and decatted ( because i've de catted them...)..they both breeze mot's and have so far been flame free..

Against type approval and construction and use = Illegal to use on the road. Simple.

Yes they may pass aMOT test (ie doesn't smoke like a bonfire under free acceleration from low to high idle) BUT that doesn't make it right.

The emissions conformance will be lost (cos cats oxidise HC, CO and a few other nasties) and DO reduce particulate matter mass, but do little for soot.

Morally wrong IMO. (As I work in emissions control for a large diesel engine manufacturer)

yep... i totally agree with you on the moral grounds...but cars aren't tested like that are they?

as long as cars aren't tested to type approval on emissions, then it's legal to gain an MOT certificate with a car modified in this way...

I decatted our cars as turbo failure lead to massive oil contamination of the cats, which where removed from their cans and the cans re-seam welded to preserve the original look..Morally wrong perhaps, but finacially very viable under the current testing regime..

    Agreed, not a perfect world.

Why did you remove the cats? Even if they were heavily contaminated with oil, it would have burnt off and the cat would have probably regained most of its performance. I remember some contamination tests I did a couple of years ago, we intentionally pumped diesel, oil and coolant into the exhaust (not all together though) to see what degradation of catalysts would occur. You'd be surprised by the results. Quite robust these catalysts.
