Default Driving in the US of A

I've just been on holiday in LA and hired a car for six days. I got Subaru Forrester, its like a 4wd estate. Thank God it was an auto as that was one thing less to think about. Driving over there seems really laid back. Almost everyone actually stops at the STOP signs and is fairly relaxed and forgiving of my Brit custom, such as right of way and complicated cross roads.

I read the californian highway code before I went and cracked up with regard to pedestrians. Basically it says that at crosswalks (zebra crossing to you and me) to give way to pedestrians. Thats fine. Then it says that marked or otherwise there is a crosswalk at every intersection (junction). Thats ok too. But the fun bit is that it says there might be crosswalk in the middle of a block and if it isnt marked, make eye contact with the pedestrians - they all wear bl00dy sunglassess over there!! Oh and you have to give way to bi-cyclists, not homo or hetro ones, just bi ones - do they wear a badge?

Good news is I managed to get a Porter Cable brand new from hardware store for £60. Had fun a LAX airport with the hand luggage folk but managed to get it back in the country (just!). So now I need the transformers and other bits.

Just thought I share this with you.

Glad you had a good time over there -driving's so easy, isn't it? They usually stop at STOP signs, because they give you a ticket if you don't! I managed to confuse the cop who pulled me in Fort Lauderdale with my English accent and British driving license, so he let me off. It amazes me how many miles you can cover in a day, when you're not being held up by road works all the time.

Road works hardly seem to exist!! But then again the roads arent in too good a nick - thats whey they seem to drive slowly.

Didnt know you get a ticket for not stopping at the STOP signs. I must confess to treating them like Give Way signs after a while. I must have been lucky!

Yes, as in the UK, you must stop at a stop sign.

The turn right on red is a bit puzzling to start with. I've been there a few times and think it is really laid back. Driving is SOO easy.

yep it is obvious but there are loads of times when you think its pointless!!

and the turn right thing at a red light - now that does make sense.

Turn on red is great. We should do it here, but turn left of course.

i love driving over there my wife is american , and i have driven all over the west side of america.... Best road trip was when i drove fron salt lake city , through vegas and down to aunty in Corona just out side Los Angeles... 14 Hours of driving in one go ... that was a trip....
But bearit in mind though, try not to go out driving in the rain in California, as the american do not drive in the rain often...
I started the journey back and there were5 Deaths in the space of 10 miles, due to cars skidding on the wet tarmac and hitting lorries....

Good to here you got back safely

I was driving South from Indy one night in the rain and there were LOADS of yanks parked up on the shoulder waiting for the rain to ease. I looked on in slight bemusement.

OK, let me see if I read this correctly; you were in LA (assuming you meant Los Angeles since you mentioned LAX and not Louisiana) and traffic was moving?

I truly am finding that hard to believe

Do you know Aura XR, the trafffic no matter what time of day was so much better than over here. If I hit a que on the freeway between 4-5pm I would potter along at 10mph for say 15 minutes and then it was gone. Over here I used to park up for 1/2 hour some days until I got a job near home. Ad everybody is so relaxed.
