Default Oil Smell in new CDTI

    Hi
Just took delivery of brand new 1.9 CDTi 150 Exclusiv. I've noticed a distinct smell of oil - possibly gear oil - in the cabin when bringing the car stationary after the engine has got to operating temperature. It pervades the cabin immediately on becoming stationary and on lifting the bonnet it can be detected there too. Friends have commented on it too without prompting, so it's not my imagination. Anyone know anything about such an issue before I approach the dealer and get the usual "no fault found" or "they all do that sir" response (not that I'm the cynical sort!)
    Regards
    Terry

May be there was some oil spilled over on the engine bay and when the thing warms up, the dripps of oil are burnnig producing the smell.

it may also be the heady smell of exhaust emissions as well, as i know that VX are having trouble with their EGR valves and turbos.. when ours failed in your manner, the smoke plume could easily be seen rising from below the turbo heat sheilding.. there was an oil leak on the turbo which burnt when the turbo was hot....

take it back in.. they do not all do that and if they come out with 'it's only because it's new sir, it will go away' ask them to show you another new 150 CDTi and see if that dose the same ( as it won't.. )

Terryads - I'm experiencing exactly the same thing with my brand new 1.9cdti (150) - contacted my local dealer today to enquire as to whether it was part of a 'normal' process for this engine - they said it doesn't sound normal and have it booked in tomorrow for investigation! Smells like oil dripping onto the exhaust or exhaust manifold to me.

I'll let you know the outcome!

    Default Update

Visited the dealer today. Got the expected "no fault found" then insisted on taking a "technician" out in the car, who conceded there was a smell of oil. He further told me this model is very prone to failure of the turbo oil seals (£1800 when you are out of warranty ..... ) Under the bonnet it seems to be emanating from that area. He backtracked a bit when we got back to base claiming he thought it was 75% "new car smell", although there was a smell of oil. This is the third vauxhall I've had - both the previous ones were dogs, and I swore I'd never have another, but then was seduced by the performance of this engine. I'm beginning to wish I'd listened to my head ..........
I'll keep you posted - it's in tomorrow for a day

as the techie said...turbo failure is far more previlent than VX will want to admit..they will quietly change it for you i'm sure..

when ours went 'pop' the first time, VX told the dealer to tighten the hose clips on the turbo to stop the leaking oil falling out.... to hide the problem..

it took quite a bit of 'presuasion' but we got another turbo...that lasted 6 weeeks, then we had another.. with a faulty casting...now on turbo 4 at 26K miles...

Ours is EXTREME.. but they DO fail..and VX DO know about it..

You will probably find that it is cos it is a new car and it is the engine warming up most new cdti cars have that smell

yep, but not for long, as they are only burning off the oils and fluids left on the outside of the engine during assembly of the car..this won't last long at all..
