    Default Directline Insurance

Shower of robbing ba$tards. Just bought a set of Snowflakes a phoned them to enquire how much it would add to my policy when i fitted them. My policy is due for renewal in jan 08 and if i add them just now it'll cost me £84. I told them that the wheels were worth £700 (that's what i paid for them) and that they weren't after market alloys, they were genuine Vauxhall wheels and that thay are a standard upgrade. Looks like i'll be changing insurance companies when renewal comes in.

Sorry to hear of your plight!

Unfortunately, for you, they ARE classed as 'after market' alloys - i.e. they were not the alloys that came with your motor when it was new. They would only be classed as a standard upgrade if you had specified them on a new vehicle.

Modifications that are made 'after market' can pose problems / cost money when they are declared to insurers, just ask some of the guys on here. The modifications that are NOT declared however can cause a heck of a lot more problems / cost a lot more money if and when they are found.

As you said, live with it for now and shop around at renewal date - but dont forget to declare them when you are looking for an alternative insurance policy.

I'll be covered as from saturday. I've had to get the 4 wheels refurbished as 1 had a bad scrape in it and the others had the odd chip in it. Anyway i took the wheels to the refurb place for price and the woman told me that the wheels are 2 different colours (2 have been done standard silver and the other 2 are the original shade. This is down to them being refurbished before).

I had the same thing with Direct Line and i believe(correct me if i`m wrong so has Duncan).Added £97 to my policy for my snowflakes and upped the excess to £400.Renewal came through last month and my insurance had gone up by £100 on top of that despite points coming off my licence. The missus scanned the net and got a quote with Adrian Flux for £381.That covers all mods including the front splitter which has once again been snapped in two(my own fault this time). It also includes European Roadside cover.Quote was £300.50 cheaper then the robbing T*****T at Direct Line.Really pays to shop around.

I had a recent 'quibble' with them about my renewal, but I haven't had any hikes in premium due to mods.

My Irmscher suspension has been classed as a factory fit due to it being a VX part, and added nothing to the premium, as were my wheels as they are a wheel that can come standard on a Signum (Exclusive). The suspension etc. is even covered as like for like replacement as was proven with the Porsche incident - not only did they replace the damaged strut/spring with the same, they replaced the non-damaged side so that they were replaced as a pair. Apart from the bit of hassle with the renewal quote (which I got sorted) I've been very happy with DL so far.

I did the same when I got my revised DL quote (just to see) and they couldn't touch the price DL gave me!

Just shows how we all have different experiences etc. with insurers!

    Hiya.

When you told the insurers the price of the wheels or the price of the wheels and tyres ??? i know directline has threasholds for wheels like £499=cheep and £500=expensive. The old wheels had tyres on worth £100 a corner?? When asked for the wheels value tell them the wheels not tyres value.

Duncan after reading your post about directline, it helped me lots to get a great deal with them, i did not renew, i cancled the insurance, rang up as a new customer for both of my cars i got both for the price of just the one.... with intrest free and breakdown. Funy thing is they included with the documents a envlope to sent proof of no claims from last insurer (them).

Directline seams to have diffrent call centers, i would say 75% of operators are unhelpfull, dont give up first attempt to talking to them.
