Default Sri rear lights? Darker than mine?!

I parked up next to some old boys standard 53 plate sri yesterday in Lincoln - when I returned to the car I realised how much darker his smoked indicator section of his rear lights were than mine!!! - How annoyed am I!!!!

They're obviously not smoked (I'd say) and it was just the indicator section - why is this? Does anyone know?

And before anyone asks - no, mine aren't elegance/elite ones.

Yeh, that's right. Pre-facelift SRI/GSI's fitted with 'grey' rear indicator sections. Facelifts fitted with clear ones (except for 'Life' models IIRC).

I noticed this when I sourced my "smoked, red, red, white" rear lamps from a scrapyard, the original pair they sent were off one car, the same car.

One of them was a knacker job so they sent a replacement for the broken one, when I compared the two smoked sections one was darker on the other, when I looked on the reverse of the lamps one of them has black plastic backing and the other has grey plastic backing (Off two different cars) so I'm assuming at some point, for whatever reason, they changed the backings of the lamps from grey to black or vice versa (sp) but IMO this is what makes the difference in how dark the lamps are.

I.E: If you have the lamps with the black backing the light is reflecting into the lamp and off the black backing thus making the lamp appear "darker" rather than reflecting off the grey backing (a lighter colour) making the section seem "lighter"

    Does that make sense?

Uncanny...i was going to ask the same thing...

To my knowledge i thought there as only 3 types of rear lights, standard early LS - Elite spec (with the Orange indicators), Tinted (With the dark indicators) and the clear (with the err, clear indicators)...but i too noticed some SRi/GSi rear lights that looked a different shade to others...must be the angle of light as icetrix said...

Unless they fade with age, like some tinted side repeaters do?

I stand corrected. Some facelifts do have matching rear indicator and reversing sections though. In any case, smoked are far better than clear IMO. Maybe the earlier facelifts were with smoked, I don't know. IMO you can't beat 'dark-style' front and rear lights and smoked rear indicators.

Hang on - lets clear this up - there are 3 types of indiaator colours - orange, clear and smoked.....

I noticed that the smoked comes in two shades....I was wondering why.
