confused flashing hazards on a camera van????????

    Hi,

Was driving to work this morning (country roads with a few villages). Entered one village and noticed a camera van with its back to me - i.e. detecting my side of the road. I was going a little quick so slammed on the anchors but it might have been too late. (when i say a little quick, after you've allowed speedo inaccuracy I would think i would only be a few miles an hour over - so might get away with it on tolerances!!)

However, as I got level with the camera van the hazards flashed twice (like double locking the vec) then flashed rapidly about 6/8 times (like when you unlock a peugeot). Does anyone know if this has any significance to whther they had got me or not??? (if it makes any difference i was out of camera sight at this point but a wagon had just gone flying the other way - well over limit)

It was almost as if it was locked then unlocked!!!

And does anyone know how far away they detect i.e. is it within x metres of the van or do they go quite far???

Thanks for any light shed on this one - it's really puzzling me

    Nick

Distance wise the LTI 20-20 (The weapon of choice!)can be used at pretty much any distance. If you can see the vehicle through the site then you can use it.
In practice 600-800M is about the limit. However camera vans use MUCH shorter distances because they also record the check on video so they like to try and get an ID on the driver. If you were only a few MPH over you should be OK.
The hazards dont mean anything, other than maybe it was being locked/unlocked. Hopefully the operator wasn't in the van!!
If your worried phone your police force at the beginning of next week and ask for the Ticket Unit, ours is called 'Central ticket unit'. If you give them you Reg they will be able to tell you if you are on the list (But hopefully not)

I think its LT2200 or something they use in them camera vans - and your talking about a range of something ridiculous like half a mile i'm afraid mate. They say when you see them they've already seen you and got you.

Look at some of the websites that are around http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/

Ultimatly you just gonna have to sit it out for two weeks and see. Fingers crossed for you.

    Default Range

I'm afraid range depends on how new the system is. If you're in a force that has the old sort of camera they can do you from as far away as they can see you-the new sort you have to be very close so it depends upon your force I'm afraid. Speed wise they give you a limit of speedlimit plus 10% plus 1 or 2 mph depending upon the force ie 40 mph + 10%+ 1= 40+4+1=45.

    Alternatively don't speed..................!!

Ahh, the 2 week wait *lol* had a few of them, usually ends up that they didn`t zap you though, sounds like he was locking/unlocking so probably wasn`t in it at the time, or at least not at the scamera I would say ..

Maybe the operator was round the back having a pee...... or whacking one off!

If you ever get a letter never reply before the 14 days are up especially if you ring them to tell them it's wrong cause lo and behold you will end up with a correct one on your doorstep! After 14 days they can't change it or do you.

I've noticed a lot of cameras on bridges in the last week, I don't mean the usual traffic master ones, But ones on long poles approx 10ft high with a chained metal box at the base with one camera on each lane, there is usually a van parked local to them but it's not a police van . Anyone know what they are ?????
