    Default Tinted windows beware

Just got of the phone with my brother in law. and he has been in talks to day with the local poilce.. Apparently they are gonna be looking at Tinted windows a lot more closely.
Most tinted windows from the factory are 70% and apparently that is now gonna be the bench mark, all after market tiniting is to be less then this, so that means the end of the Limo Tints

To clarify.....Front windows, ie. driver and passenger doors, and the windscreen must have a minimum light transparency of 70%.
Any decent car with factory tinted glass is already at these levels. The addition of any further tint goes below the minimum level and will therefore be illegal.

ANY other windows on the vehicle can be tinted to any level, ie. anything behind the 'B' pillar.

And yes there will be a clampdown on 'illegal' tints.
The Police & VOSA have the power to immediately prohibit you from using your car until the defect is rectified.

That means potentially being stopped at the roadside and not being able to drive your car again until it's sorted out.

I had my car booked in for tinting on Friday but cancelled it after talking to a couple of other reputable tinters. Both said there was a clampdown on tints & said they wouldn't do the front door windows. I also didn't realise but not only can you be fined but can be given penalty points. They were of the opinion that the clampdown is because tints make it much harder to recognise drivers from traffic cameras picys

IIRC it's been illegal to tint the drivers and passengers windows for some time now - This car and my previous one the tinter said no to the front - no bother so just had the rears done.

As Sonicboom has stated, from the the 'B' pillar back you can have what you like - I wouldn't have cancelled cos I couldn't have the fronts done!!

tbh guy's my mate had a BX done yr's ago and you just couldn't see much through the side windows, when it rained it got worse, I know it all looks neat for show, but practicality wise it's not a good idea at all, what ppl miss is that say you were waiting to turn right at night, there's a good chance if a cyclist comes along you will miss him altogether and someone could end up dead, personally I think the rear window done in a complimentary way to the original glass plus a sun strip is about as far as you need to go anyway to give an individual look.

My reason for wanting the tints is not cosmetic but because the sun shining through the windscreen & the drivers window drives me batty when I'm driving, so I didn't really see any benefit in having the back windows done. Even the sunstrip is limited to 2" inside the wiper zone (IIRC) so would only be about 4" deep

To clarify again, because I missed it out..
    The limits are,
    Windscreen 75% transparency
    Front windows 70% transparency
Behind 'B' pillar.......Fill Yer Boots, black em out!

As has been said, go careful people because the piece of kit used to test the light transparency, such as 'Tintman' is being used by VOSA & Police at the roadside. Someone has previously said that they are not bothered because they saw x amount of Police cars and didnt get stopped.
If the Police officers dont have the kit to measure the amount of tint then they wont bother stopping you. However if they have, and more and more forces are buying the kit, then it's going to get expensive.
Don't give them the opportunity of making you the next one to get done!!

I still give out warnings to drivers if the front windows are tinted, its just a matter of checking the factory tint value on the glass and getting the driver to admit they have had additional tints.... I have never issued a ticket for it, just tried to educate the driver i.e "If you have a crash and your insurer finds out you have illegal tints you'll be in a whole world of sh**!!"

I have read the TintMan manual, but finding one when I need one is a right pain in the ****!!!!
