how much oil is needed for a oil change on a 1.9 cdti 2004
i think its 4.3 lts but can anyone confirm

Yep, 4.3l if you change the filter. 1l between max and min on dipstick.

No prob. Obviously don't whack in 4l straight away as there will still be a bit hanging around in the engine, I'd put in half a litre less then let it settle and top up as required.

Stupid Q, I know the oil level should be 4.3 Litres, but how is that shown on the dipstick? Is it in the middle, minimum or maximum?

With the correct amount of oil in the engine, the dispstick should indicate max on it.

From min to max is 0.7 litres on the the 1.9 CDTi engines. So if on the min level you would only have 3.6 litres of oil remaining in the engine.

Note however, most dipsticks are 1 litre between min and max (excluding the 1.9 CDTi engine and possibly the Z22SE - found 2 different bits of info on the Z22SE)
