The sun was shining and the roads were dry, so basically it was a great morning for a gentle drive to work today. That was until I pulled up at the last set of traffic lights which lead to the A627M. Do you ever get the feeling whilst sitting at the lights that someone is checking you out? I obviously get this all the time and they're normally women checking out my good looks . Anyway, this morning I had that very feeling, so I looked to my left and what should I see sitting at the front of the lights with me but a Blue Ford Focus ST. The driver was checking out my car and when he noticed that I was looking at him he gave me one of those looks he gives to a piece of something that he's stood in. A look which was obviously supposed to make me feel inferior, but which in fact made me a little determined to show this Dagenham Dustbin driver what a big heavy Veccy can do.
I noticed that he slipped into first gear and released his handbrake, holding his Fraud on the clutch bite. So obviously being me I took the bait like a carp does to Grandpa's old homemade fishing bait and did the same. The lights changed to amber and instead of a drag start I'd been expecting the ST simply pulled forwards normally, so I obliged and did the same. We were neck and neck but both behaving impeccably and driving very safely indeed. Just as I was changing up to third gear the ST suddenly made a mad dash for it? The front of it reared up and the back end sunk down nicely. This was playing right into my hands I thought, so I matched his vigour. I can't vouch for the driver of the ST, but I was accelerating as hard as the car would allow. The ST did have the edge, but I was very surprised to be keeping up with him. I would say he probably had a car length to a car and a half over me at the most at any one time. To say I was doing well was an understatement, I was expecting the ST to just pull away and leave me in its wake, but it didn't happen.
Reaching silly speeds now, and the roundabout for the M62 was approaching fast, so we both braked down ready for the roundabout. As luck would have it the traffic lights before the roundabout were on red so we stopped. The ST driver’s window was going down, so I dropped my front passenger window. 'Not bad' he said, 'what's under there the 2.8?’
'No mate it's a 1.9 diesel' I replied
'Ferk off' he said 'really?'.
'Afraid so matey, but it is tweaked a bit', was my reply
'Don't talk sh*t*' he said 'this is a 2.5 turbo lump. There's no way a diesel could keep up with this'
I never got to reply as the lights changed to green and he was off. He headed for Rochdale and I gently cruised on to the M62 with a satisfying grin on my face.
As you've probably guessed my tuning box is back on, but it's only on 18 turns so I estimate that the car is kicking out circa 185bhp. In my opinion if an ST tries it on with a Veccy with the power of either Big Phil's, Ian_C's or Harry's motors, they'd better be prepared to lose. If they try it on with a Vec VXR they are going to lose very badly indeed.
So, here's one happy CDTi driver.
