    Default 225/45's...any disadvantages?

I'm thinking of changing over to 225/45's (17") in lieu of my current 215/50's when they are finally worn out. I have switched my tyres round to try to ensure that they will all wear out together as I don't want to have odd sizes on the car at the same time.
225/45's (make for make) seem to be 30% or so cheaper - no doubt due to the economies of sale of beiing a much more popular size than the 215/50 which are fitted to very few cars.
This bigger size is listed in the handbook as a GM certified alternate......but what are the disadvantages? Will the ride be much worse? Will they wear out sooner?
.......but they will look better of course, being that little bit fatter (if only the same were true of people!!!).
At about 2.5% smaller rolling circumference, I doubt if I'll notice any changes to the performance/economy/speedo readings/odometer/etc, but I am concerned that the already hard(ish) ride of the SRi may be significantly worsened by this change.
Feedback from anyone who has made this change woulds be most welcome.
    Happy Driving,
    Doug

I switched to 225/45/17's recently and I didn't notice any extra harshness in ride - and mine's lower (30mm from standard) than the SRi.

dont forget that the /45 or /50 is the aspect ratio of the width. ie 215/50 means the height of the profile is 50% of the width.

dropping to a 45 profile would mean a smaller height but as youve also increased the width, it stays roughly the same..

    eg 50% of 215 giving a hiegt of 107.5mm or 45% of 225 giving a hieght of 101mm. 6.5mm isnt much difference.

    Your right Andy,

If you take two tyre heights and add the 'constant' (17" / 431.8mm) that gives a rolling diameter of 634.3mm for 225/45 and 646.8mm for 215/50.

That's less than a 2% reduction, which I think most people would be unable to tell. Actually it's probably less than the difference between brand new and worn out tyres.

Interestingly, forum users report that there is no noticable reduction in ride quality, so I think this is the way I'll go as soon as I'm down to 3mm or so all round.

And, being brought up in the north, I do value the considerable cost saving!!!

225/45's it is then............but what make?

    Doug

P.S. Anyone know how to edit a previous post?

    The FAQ tell me to:
"click the button by the post you want to edit".......

but, I can't see that button anywhere on my display.

I can recommend Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 and Continental SportContact 2.
Both winners in ADAC:s 225/45-17 test.

Posts can be edited for up to 30 mins after being posted - doesn't matter if someone replies.
