Default fuel consumption on v6 dpf

Right chaps, had my 56 signum v6 cdti auto for about a month/2000 miles.
Generally very happy with it - drives well, reasonable "go", quiet, practical etc.
Most of my driving is motorway and as a result I usually match or better the official combined figure. For example my previous motor was 25.8 combined, but over 60k I averaged 28 mpg.
So, I'm a little disappointed to only be getting about 38. The computer reckons 36 and seems to be a real pessimist about consumption and range remaining. Last week the fuel light was flashing, range was 1 mile but it only took 51 litres to fill. That worked out at 39.2, but I had done a long (270 miles) steady trip at 70 to 80.
Cars only done just over 10k so I suppose it might still be loosening up (up to 20k from what I've seen on here).
Twice I've seen the instant cons go to 1gal/hr when idling, which I presume is the DPF regen thing happening - I didn't notice if the HRW was on (and why does it come on anyway?)
I'm wondering if it might need a ecu update - how can I tell, or is it just take it to the stealers?

Sorry for the big post, but what are anybody's thoughts about it?

    Cheers,
    Marty.

39.2 isnt too bad for an auto I'd of thought. But if you have been driving steady at 70 - 80 I dont think you will get any more mpg than that (well maybe driving 50-60 but who want to do that on a motorway!). What mpg were you expecting?

Absolutley spot on. while driving when the DPF comes on, you'll notice the instaneous consuption wont go much above 24mpg. It should only last for about 12 miles but when it happens depends on how you drive and frequency. Mine goes anywhere between 800 & 1500 between regens.

Not sure what the HRW is? and on a 56 plate there shouldn't be any ECU updates.

I usually (ie every other car) beat the combined figure, which is 39.2 for this car - OK I managed to equal it on a long steady run, but my previous car I got about 10% more than official combined as an average - on a good run I could double that.
I was hoping to get 42 or so, as an average, for the type of driving I do.
If I can't get over 40 even when trying quite hard it makes the 52.3 extra urban look a very long way away.

    Thought so.

Sorry, Heated Rear Window - supposedly comes on with regen, although I don't understand why
Fair enough about the updates - it was supposed to have been checked anyhow.

Maybe I'm just expecting too much, but going on past experience with every other car I anticipated better.

How accurate are the computers generally?
Mine overestimates the fuel consumed by about a gallon over the tank which naturally gives pessimistic mpg and range figures.

Ask Matt when he comes along. He has got a Signum 3.0 manual, but on tests I think he has had well over 40mpg....

The best I've had out of mine is 42mpg. But that is rare for me

Why does HRW come on when active regen is happening???? Is it to put some load on alternator, even if daylight running (ie not a lot of load)

I get about 38-40 out of my 1.8 petrol. Noticed that if i stick to about 70 on Motorway, then it can increase. BUT if I drive slower it decreases. So, clearly there is an optimum driving speed of around 70, which makes sense I suppose.
Mine is mainly m-way (500 miles a week)

you'll get the 52.3 if you drive at a constant 56mph on a flat road - thats more or less where they get those figures from. I get on a long run about 42 - 45 if i'm lucky. mines a manual though and the autos are supposed to be a bit thirsty in comparision. TBH your figures sound about right. It may be a diesel but its also three litres!

I've got a 3.0 manual. I can get up to mid 40s mpg, but i thought the auto was afair bit more greedy. So around 40 sounds about right.
