    Default Tyre question...

    Hi Guys

ok.. same old question i know.. but which tyres would you recommend for my 3.0cdti??? Its on 215/50 r17's (Extra load) at the mo..

Is it important to have extra load tyres??? What difference does it make compared to standard tyres???

Anything must be better than the Goodyear NCT5's that are on at the mo... the seem dreadful in the wet.

    Any advice.. gratefully received...

    Thanks

    Darren

For the 3.0V6 it's very important to make sure you have the extra load tyres. It needs it due to the extra weight of the engine (heaviest of the whole range).

As for what tyre - how long is a piece of string. Depends what your priorities are - good wear, good grip, good balance etc.

Thanks for that piece of advice Duncan.. I thought thats what it could mean..

As for the tyres.. Im looking for something thats got good wear but also good grip in the wet and dry.. I know its a hard balance to find.... but i was just wondering if there was anything else out there apart from Michelin Pilots??

I think the fact that ive got a slighty odd tyre size is not helping!

Do what I have done and change from 215/50x17's to 225/45x17's.
They fit the wheels, Vauxhall list them to fit. They are cheaper and there is greater choice.
You will find stacks of threads on here about this.

If you are really bothered - yes it does - if not then no.

If yes you will have to o the vx dealer and have the tyre size changed in the ECU using Tech2. I had this done - 10 mins tops - £££ for the pleasure.....

225/45/17 do come in XL as well - still more choice and in the main, cheaper.

    Try this site for prices

    You can use any :
    215/50R17 XL 95W
    225/45R17 XL 94Y

The cheapest tyres to keep to the original NCT5 215/50R17 XL 95W were £130 each, after much haggling
I looked at other 215/50R17 XL 95W, but they too were about the same price

I then looked at 225/45R17 XL 94Y and not only was there a greater choice, but they are about 25% cheaper
I then compared the treadwear / traction /temperature ratios
The equivalent Good Year comes out as the F1 GSD3
    I haggled for £90 each
As a result I am now in the process of changing over

I also have access to one of only three Accident Investigation computers
On my last visit to the one in Aberdeen I did a comparison for a Vectra C 3.0 V6 CDTI on various tyres

You can get away with the standard tyre, but the weight of the 3.0 V6 CDTI is just a few kilograms over the limit
What can happen is that if you are cornering, at full speed, and you then suffer a tyre failure, you should be able to bring the car safely to a stop
In some of the analysis carried out it was clear this would not happen and the car would suffer severe understeer and if braking was required this could also result in oversteer
The worst example and result was for a rear tyre failure on cornering
Clearly these aren't things you want happening
However, be assured the calculations were for full speed and not more than 80mph

Ask Mark the Cabby what happened to two (if not three) of the tyres that were fitted wrongly by a tyre place. They didn't fit the correct load rating (just used the standard one) and he had catastrophic failure of the tyres (each at different times) - they were shredded. It took a bit of time to get to the bottom of the problem - hence the subsequent number of failures in that time. Failures were at normal motorway speeds/normal driving - not whilst cornering etc.

After seeing what happened to standard load tyres on a 3.0CDTI, I'd never, ever put anything other than Extra Load on if I had that engine.
