    Default Dilemma

Say for arguement sake, you'd had a problem with a service to your house.

In order for it to be resolved, the service provider had to dig up the pavement outside your house, accross your drive.

Lets imagine, that the way the pavement was left, was so bad, that the tarmac they laid down collapsed, crumbled, lifted and no matter how hard you tried, it got trodden into your house, car etc, making a right mess but only ruining your car mats, because you have a good door mat and real wooden flooring.

Obviously, you've complained to the provider, who put you in touch with the contractor. They've agreed they've made a mess, appologise profusely and decide to bung you £100 compo.

But, the contractors have outsourced the job. As a result, the owner of that company, a real gent as it turns out, popped around your house, and gave you a checque for £100, full of appologies and a friendly handshake.

Now imagine that the contractors also send you a cheque for £100, so in effect you have two lots of compensation. The original cheque has already cleared.

    What do you do?

    Is your name Earl?

Cash 'em both as I'd say the damage caused is more than £100. It was their choice to both send/give the cheques, they weren't asked/demanded for separately. Treat it as if both companies have decided to give their own compensation.

    Job done.

    As above.

I have to assume they put the poor workmanship right too.

Pavement's fixed OK now, but to cut a long story short, My street has red tarmac, the patched it very badly with black tarmac, plus they went accross my neighbours drive too, meaning they couldn't park outside for a few weeks, which did cause quite a bit of embarassment to me.

We're all sweet again now, but I really thought it may have caused friction at one point, which I desperately didn't want, as for the first time in my life, I've got brilliant neighbours all around me.

Cash both cheques and phone both companies wanting to know where your cheques are , but you'll settle for a free holiday instead.

You bank one, the wife banks the other, if issue is raised in future, it's a mistake cos neither knew the other had banked the cheque, simple innit, now I need two cool headed gunmen, and someone with a getaway van like Mr T's.
