Default 2.2 SRi - lack of air to engine when starting???

Hi, Over the last week or so when I go to start my car from cold I really have to turn the key and pump the throttle to bring the car alive, (used to just turn the key and it woulf fire straigh up) it seems like there is not enough air being fed through the system, also im suffering from big flat spots from low revs and I have to over rev to make the car move through the flat spot, it is also making a strange induction sound around this flat spot area which is about 1-2k rev range.
    any ideas?

    Cheers Ste

May also be worth removing EGR valve and throttle body and give those a good clean out.

Odds on the TD is covered in soot and oil. Best bet is just to get it off and give it a good clean, 99% of the time on a 2.2 that will be your problem. If hat fails take the inlet pipe of the Tb, get someone to look at the TB as you first turn on the Ignition and then start the car. Once its started shut it off straight away, you dont want to suck in any rubbish. The guy watching should report back to you that the TB does a test sweep on ignition, as in the butterfly should open and then close without any throttle input. If that is all fine then the throttle actuation is all fine and dandy. If there is a air leak in the manifold then the car would rev like billy oh as more fuel would be added to compensate for the extra air. Last straw would then be the EGR. Might sound stupid but just check the MAF is securely plugged in also. HTH

Absolutely nothing mate, bit of a typo although B&D are pretty far apart LOL. It was supposed to say TB (throttle body)

The little chimney behind the butterfly is the EGR vent, you can see the pipe leading to it under the TB. The butterfly edges and where it seats gets full of carbon and in affect makes it air tight. The 2.2 TB needs a little gap to let in just enough air for tick over, so if its dirty round there it causes rough idle.

Haha Thanks for replying, I have taken off the TB already and cleaned it but still the same but im going to take it off again and check that chimney you are on about is not blocked. Regarding the inlet manifold, the car isn't reving badly either theres just no power on take off untill about 2000rpm. Sorry for all these questions but if it was the inlet manifold would it just be a new gasket change or is there more involved then that?
