Does cruise control increase or decrease mpg, heard different views so does anyone out there know for definite whether it is more economical or not?????

depends on how you would drive personally anyway. So could do either or both, or neither.
Have had cruise on a Veecy 2.2 and now on the 2.0t Siggy and can get 3-4 mpg better not using it - again though it's down to how you use the right foot
With me i prob get more when i use it (on motorways and long dual carriageways) as i tend to vary my speed quite alot when i'm not using it, but when i am i tend not to be bothered. Also stops me speeding as much, which has to be good!
its about the same with mine on the mpg
I've often wondered this too, I get the impression the mpg is slightly less when I put it on, but could be imagining it.
Does anyone know how the cruise manages to keep the speed constant when you go down a very steep hill in a high gear? Amazes me that does, and does that use extra fuel in itself, when it struggles to slow the car down?
In one, a driver will be heavier or lighter on the throttle, the CC will just work to the speed it's told to, so you could be slightly on the gas a bit more than the CC so you will get less, however it works the other way also, I think personally there isn't much in it either side.
if the hill is so steep that even 0 throttle will cause the vehicle speed to rise (ie motoring) then is will not keep the same speed. It will only keep constant speed if it can by engine braking alone, ie it cannot apply the brakes.
yeah, i know it's not connected to the brakes.
I have noticed it speeds up slightly when going steeply downhill, but have been surprised how it has stayed pretty close to my cruise speed.
hmmm... it must be just the engine, yes.
It feels different to petrol engined cars i've had with cruise control...
edit: shouldn't be though, just done some Googling, and apparantly, diesels are WORSE for engine braking than petrols!
Just my imagination then, forget it.
