@JagRigger in your case try and park the car overnight with the engine facing downhill see if that makes a difference first if it does higly likely that it's fuel returning to the tank and that indicates a leak in the fuel system. if it doesn't make a difference, i'd check the plugs (and replace if needed), state of the throttle valve and intake (clean it if needed) and check the coil pack. unless yours does the it only after filling up, than find the tank ventilation valve and check if it is working. Not sure if the 1.8vvt has an evap valve like the 2.8t.

It faces downhill at home - no difference. The fact it fires after a prime makes me think it is losing 'the head of pressure' but no obvious leaks. was thinking of shoving another rail on it to see if that makes a difference

It could just be the fuel rail or the o-rings on it or on the injectors that aren't sealing right...

Or my purge valve... they're only a tenner for a pattern part so that'll be next

Now that I've had time to look through the pics on the link, that looks doable (even for me). And with the help given by @northpole re the part number it looks like I'll be giving it a shot.
Thanks for the help both of you

northpole bad girl! The 2.8t does not have an EGR.
And both bad girls for not googling, its one of the biggest common problems for the 2.8t.
And that's the bottom line.

Think I found my issue. Wasn't the purge valve. I'm pretty sure I had an injector sticking open. A few times I tried pressing the schraeder valve on the rail. If there was pressure, car started. If not, it didn't until primed. Ran it down to half a gallon, added a full bottle of cleaner and gave it a 15 mile blast ( "add to full tank" - yeah, right ) . Seems to have improved it
Thinking about it, my boat outboard HATES E10 and I ended up having to pull and clean the jets mid trip sometimes ( Now on E5 & stabiliser ) so maybe the E10 was gumming up an injector ?

@JagRigger that wouldn't surprise me at all the bio content does leave some varnish behind and can actually have the injectors sticking... Maybe you should make a habit out of running an injector cleaner every so many tanks, that way it gets to clean up the complete fuel system and keep the problem at bay.
