confused Vectra C shaking at all speeds

Hi guys, I need some qualified help with this.

    Video - remember sound:
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/JDQ4BqDN9M3w6wNo7

I have had what feels like a terrible wheel shake or flat spot on a wheel for a while now. Tried three different set of wheels and got alignment done, and suspension checked by garage.

it starts from 15mph and up, following the speed of the car. Have checked all wheels for play when lifted up, nothing. No change when accelating, braking or cornering. The rear doesn’t feel loose either.

The other day I was able to feel/hear some play in the rear, when pulling/pushing top of the wheel with car on the ground. I can only make this happen sometimes, if I drive the car around the block I might not be able to replicate the play. When it is there, I can do it from both sides and when it’s gone none of the sides will do it.

Any ideas what this most likely can be and how I can find out? I’m thinking banana arms or maybe wheel bearing, but can this cause me to jump up and down inside the car?

    Thanks

Right we do things differently here: Go and introduce yourself in the appropriate topic, and don't forget to put a picture of your car up.. ( you managed to put up a link to a video so adding a picture shouldn't be to hard) Normally that would be the only thing i would say and not answer your question but i'm in a generous mood today (it won't last long though, yeah i know myself... anyway)

before you do anything else check the wheelbolts are actually tightened properly... you won't be the first or the last that hasn't tightened them properly.

    Now for your video:
you are checking play on a wheel while the car is on the ground? you are doing it wrong... jack the car up hold the wheel at 12 and 6 o' clock than try to move it.. if it makes the same noise and has movement than its the wheel bearing that has play... if it has play when you try to move it while holding the wheel at 9 and 3 o' clock position it's suspension arms and it could be the upper or lower ones so you'll need to use a prybar to check each of those components.

If you can't check that yourself ... take it to a garage and ask them to check the rear properly, any garage should be able to find that play and advise properly.. as that in the video is a lot of play.

    Thanks for the feedback

    • I have checked for play --> "Have checked all wheels for play when lifted up, nothing"
    • All wheels tightened and torqued, for all three sets of wheels, always.
    • The sound comes from underneath the car, so very hard to tell where the shaking origins from.
My best guess is the rear left or right, also because I would expect a bad steering wheel shake if it was front related.
    • Springs and shocks are fairly new Eibach and Bilstein B4's so I don't suspect those.

you won't be the first to think it's the wheel bearing or suspension arms while it is just the exhaust banging about.. so id say jack it up put it on axle stands and move everything underneath with a prybar, but that movement you showed on the wheel in the video points to a bad wheelbearing but you only apply pressure on one point... so the lot is misleading and could just be the tire flexing making it look like the wheel is moving...

but you mentioned having new suspension... i would check if the bolts are tightened properly to the shocks and check the resr springs are seated right... they can be put on the wrong way around and even turned the wrong way causing them to bow out instead of sitting straight when compressed... all of that can create noises so that would be my 2nd check after i made sure the wheels are bolted down properly (especially if you haven't put them on yourself just make sure)

    - I agree that it sounds exactly like a loose wheel, but they are definitely not loose and I have torqued them again right before the video. The sound does come from the area behind the wheel.
    - Torqued the wheels myself and did again after the video.
    - Have checked top and bottom of all 4 springs and they are not snapped, like new.
    - It is not exhaust rattle for sure

I'm a lot more concerned about the car bouncing once for what seems like every full rotation of a wheel on perfectly flat road.
Would that by the way rule out the banana arms, which I would assume would be more random or happen on uneven surface?

Worn tyres ? They can make strange noises.

best thing to do, get someone to move wheel as in vid while you reach under and and feel each joint for play, or bring over here so i can get my greasy hands on it.
