    Default Power steering issue on/off

    Hi all,

I changed the generator in my Vectra from 2005 last summer, as the generator wasn't charging, the battery went down fast, ventilators started to sound exhausted, the power steering failed and the dashboard showed a yellow exclamation mark.

Now the blowers periodically sound a bit fatigued again (like when ventilators are blocked by dust in a computer) and the power steering seems to go on and off, i.e. when I turn the wheel it feels heavy, but only in certain places. It seems like the power steering gets turned off for a second and is then turned on again. The voltage on the battery is fine.

Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this?

Usually the connector on the power steering is acting on....bad connection. You should give it a view, some cleaning...

I had the same issue and although my battery had the right voltages, it was knackered. A replacement battery sorted it for me

Well I had the same plus a whine coming from the powersteering pump, on mine it was a combination of the following:
    - alternator voltage regulator gone
    - that caused my battery to go to pot
    - my steering column was broken ( actually the bit that holds the front in the craddle had worked itself loose so i could move the steering wheel in and out, up and down, and left to right with the locking tab in closed position)

I also replaced the powersteering fluid with new OEM spec powersteering fluid but it kept making the noise until I replaced the 3 items above.

    Hi all,

Thanks for your input - here's a heads up on the issue.

It seemed to be the right side of the rack that was leaking power steering oil - a replacement of the rack fixed the problem.

Later the same week I found out that the stub axle, wheel suspension, was broken! Had to leave the car with the mechanic.

I'm not sure how this is connected to the periodic exhausted ventilation sound.

    Thanks again.

that is pure power related... you might want to do a few checks... clean all the ground cable points, and check if it goes away if it is still there... remove the pollen(cabin) filter and run the ventilation in the car you can than look down right on top of the interior fan and if it is out of balance you'll be able to see that it has damaged the housing... it's one of those things that wouldn't happen if they only designed it a bit better... or bought the same one that the other German brands use (never had that with any of those or japanese cars for that matter)

I'd check and clean the wiring first.
