That all said your mechanic should've checked it immediately as it can cause more engine damage.
Thanks. It is going back next week. Hopefully they will sort it out .

The relief valve does have a spring

Not a small one as described it would be floating in the head... if that would find it's way down into the sump it will have done quite some damage already.
Ps I did take a 1.6vvt one apart that didn't have a spring in it at all. Neither did the replacement as I checked it to make sure.
And both engines use the same engine cover (that hold the PCV valve)

Oil pressure relief valve isn't the one I was on about..
That said if that finds itself in the sump god knows what else is broken.. :so I am quite sure it is the internal spring of the oil pressure sensor that has gone.

More than likely the oil pressure sensor will be solid state so no moving parts, but given the mechanics lack of something in the brain department it could even be part of a thread that's come away. But without it in your hand who knows.

Has he had the sump down?
My guess is the spring has come out of sump plug when draining.
For me the sump needs to come off because there may be a plug and piston sitting in sump.

this is what the mechanic should've done... sump off to investigate not tell you he found a spring.. than just fill it up with new oil... they'll charge you for the oil again, plus their time to investigate.. something they should've done upon finding said spring.
best tell hem to not charge you for the oil, unless they called you and let you know and you went oke just fill it up.

I agree. They reckon they did remove the sump to clean the engine out from possible sludge clogging. The car has been in twice. First time for a service. Drove it in sounding sweet so it seems something went awry at that time. Also had the interior heating repaired. Left with this new issue. Went in second time for the flush. Still not right. Going in next week for the third time.
You are right. They should not charge me again. Just seems suspicious this happened at the service. Coincidence???
