Default All sorts going wrong, might be manifold time

    Hi guys,

Sorry I've not been on for a while, been mobbed. After changing the swirl bar, the eml came on again a few weeks back, it threw up 3 codes, see pic. The car was due for a service so decided to get the egr and glow plugs changed at the same time and investigate hoses to see if their was a gap or something. All done but it was still making the weird screech noise at start up and the turbo randomly comes and goes. Eventually realised the 4th swirl flap is lifting when the car revs and air is blowing out the top of the engine. So I'm thinking the inlet manifold is gubbed. Can someone confirm that before I head down this expensive road please? Also is there any benefit to upgrading anything at this point?

    Thanks in advance.

If it was me i would do one of two options
    1. Take off existing manifold and blank the swirl flap holes or
    2. Buy a manifold already with the swirl flaps blanked off.

Thanks for the reply, would this not mean the black smoke issue would not go away?

Air comes through the maf, maf tells ecu how much air comes through, ecu controls boost and adds fuel to increase boost, you loose air after the maf and the pressure sensor reports back to the ecu the boost isnt as high as the ecu wants, ecu adds more fuel to increase boost and the cycle continues because theres a leak. Too much fuel and its not all burnt which creates black smoke.

Does that mean if you blank the swirl flaps the black smoke goes away?

If thats where the air leak is, you need to identify where the leak/s are and repair. If yours has been mapped its best to have the inlet manifold welded up due to the higher pressures. Others report no issues with blanks but then they don't chat often to confirm later on down the road they still have no issues.
I didnt take chances, mine was welded.

Ah I see, ok, mine has a dtuk red box, I'm assuming that will add pressure?

Looking at posts on here it looks like glueing the swirl flaps closed willl result in poor performance, glueing them open or removing them and blanking them off will result in black soot at low revs. I don't want either so I have bought this uprated manifold.

Hopefully it's the correct part, looks like the plastic swirl flaps and cups have been replaced with metal ones.

Is there a way to check if the actuator is working? If memory serves me right the swirl flaps in mine are not moving when the engine is revved and the car is stationary, does the engine need to be under load to open the swirl flaps?

    Thanks in advance
