    Default pc help required

My PC came ready installed with Norton which is now out of date.

I want to uninstall it so I can install a new antivirus & firewall.

If I go to Control Panel though like I normally would to do so, it doesn't list any Norton programs at all so I can't do it from there.

There is sometimes an option from the start menu to uninstall programs but there isn't on this one.

There are a couple of other irritating programs I'd like to remove as well (one being power cinema) but they are not listed in control panel either.

How do I get rid of these pesky things peeps?

    Cheers,

    Ian

Norton should show up in the Add or Remove programs under Control Panel (which should be visible whether you're in Category or Classic view). I've assumed you're on XP?

Depending on your system, deleting Norton in the conventional method does not always work.

If you are still having problems deleting it completely, look at http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can...my_system.html

Use their own tool. This removes it completely with a few clicks.

I must be on only one left that likes Norton.

Is site advisor still warning about this site? I binned it as it showed way too many false positives.

    Steve,

Nope - your not the only one on here that still likes it - I have been using it for years now and never had any problems whatsoever (running 2 PC's and 3 laptops the majority of the time, also building machines / systems for friends and family).

Each year on each of my machines (and ones I have built) I have to COMPLETELY remove and re-install the Norton (due to me having the facility to be able to generate the serial numbers etc) and if I was to use the Norton removal tool I am unable to do this on more than half of the machines as their online tool (and also the conventional method most people use which is in Add/Remove programmes) still leaves traces of the previous Norton on your computer so it will not allow new serial numbers etc to be entered.

Dont forget that Norton (like other anti-virus programmes) hides parts of itself away deep into your computer, also using aliases, so to deter/fox/outsmart different viruses, so it has to be removed from the root, rather than by what you can see.

Using the Norton tool is normally sufficient if you are not planning on using Norton again - i.e. you are moving to another anti-virus provider, the problems mainly seem to be caused when you wish to install a different version of Norton onto your computer.

I have tried many ways to delete it completely and have found the only one to be http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can...my_system.html as previously mentioned. The process can be long winded but the instructions normally have to be followed to the letter for it to work properly.

    Gotcha..

I've removed old versions of Norton several times and then put the current one on instead as I never upgrade/renew. It's far cheaper to buy the current version from Amazon etc.

I see what you mean about removing it COMPLETLEY
