Should i spray WD 40 or drip 3in1 onto the armature itself? Would that interfere w the brushes? I've put some 3in1 on the "axle", top and bottom.

Many thanks Dog_Book, good advice, I certainly don't want to ****** about with this any more before this car goes to the great showroom in the sky. Any recommendation on make? I see 3 makes at least: NRF, Nissens and Valeo. Cheers Ian

I always stick with what the factory put in, if it lasted this long (13 years in my case) a new exact replacement will last just as long again. But those in the know on here know i tend to spend more on mine than most.

yeah he really doesn't mess about and buys new oem parts constantly, the person that'll buy his car when he finally decides to let it go will buy a car in A-class condition, he's not showing it love it almost borders insanity... and i'm not even joking look in his cars diary... you'll wonder why he chances stuff sometimes even though it's still working fine...

Thanks DB, I run my cars into the ground without sentiment (137k+ on the clock, tatty, sounds like you'd hate it), but am happy to spend a few quid more for the devil I know: Valeo it is! Cheers, Ian

Last update on this one - connected it and it spins as directed by the ECC, i.e. 0 is off, 7 is fast and all points in between, cracking! Will put it all back properly and see if it all works but looks like that's it for now. Many thanks for all the guidance! Cheers, Ian

Have you tried with the original ECC again since the new fan was mounted?

Hi Niels, no, just put it all back this am and it seems to work. Do you suspect something? Happy to do a swap over at some point to check, but the ECC was dodgy for years before the fan seemed to be playing up...

as probably said, the rotary encoder plays up making it jump number, never looked at fixing that, but have fixed an issue where you have to thump the centre wheel to get it to work lol, that needed solder joints reflowing around it
Plasma's Tech2 services are now open and able to provide services

No, I was just curious as you started changing one thing, but it only worked when you changed another thing. If the ECC has been dodgy for years it probably still is. Re-soldering the encoder as plasma suggest might fix the problem. I don't know if the push button and rotary function is in the same component, but I would think so, and it's worth a try :-)
