Default Pre-face head and side lamp problems

Further to my previous post about finding replacement AFL headlamps, I had an idea...........

The replacement lamp set I've got are non-AFL but hey are xenon lamps apparently, MUCH brighter than standards. So as the plugs are the same as on the AFL lamps I wondered if the new ones would work when plugged in without the extra connector for the main beams.

    Well, they do, sort of.

Indicators and main beams work but the dipped beams and side lights don't. But trying to make sense of the Haynes manual's wiring diagram beats me, I have NO idea what the new-style symbols mean, and where the low speed CAN bus comes into it, who knows?

In passing, it's looking as if these AFL lamps were added on by a previous owner, and he didn't do a very good job of it.

Trying to sort out the side lights first I thought it was a good chance the bulb itself had died, but I can't get at it!

The lamp in question is in the attached pic, and it would seem that access to the side lamp bulb is via the smaller circular 'hatch' top left, with the big fin sticking out of the back. All the handbooks and manuals would have me believe that if I twist that fin anti-clockwise it will come out.

    It doesn't............

So do I put a BIG wrench on it, or is there some other trick please?

the side light is housed in the reflector of the highbeam.... so it sits behind the panel under the cable connector you can just pull it out...
the one you are trying to access is the indicator and that one just twists try and read what it says on the lid as one side closes it and twisting it the opposite way will open it...

    Ah, OK. Thanks for that.

Goodness knows why the various lamps are in different places on the three (so far...) different types of lamp assembly I have.
