Thanks troutybrown, I’ll do as you suggest and see what the scanner is telling me.

Interestingly the spanner does not light now, but I am still having the lower power issue. Although it feels like the power picks up at 3000 rpm, it might actually have low power across the full range, it’s difficult to work out.

I tried using an endoscope to see the condition of the swirl flaps from the throttle chamber. However, I was not aware the intake manifold has an S curve in it, so I can’t get the endoscope through. Although I did manage to use it to see all 4 actuator arms are moving on the bar. Is it possible for the flaps to break free of the metal arms and get stuck in position? I doubt it. So, I am now thinking a jumped chain tooth is more likely.

As the car is drivable, I have time to carry out further testing, once I have my test equipment ready, and plan a future weekend of chain replacement if it is definitely needed.

Any advice and points is definitely appreciated.

My current question is, can I use a scanner tool to confirm if there is a chain problem?

Have you had a look on z22se.co.uk Evocarlos replaced the swirlflaps on my manifold didn't really make a difference. If you got op-com you can measure the pressure reg and HPFP in the settings. Lots of info how to on there.

Default The chain had jumped 4 links!!

    Quick update:
Today I took the rocket/valve cover off to check the timing chain. It took about an hour, not a bad job.

Iím glad I checked; the chain was very floppy. I compared the number of links between the INT and EXT marks on the cogs and the number of links on a new chain between the two coloured links.

THE CHAIN HAD JUMPED 4 LINKS!!

Needless to say, I think I have found the major cause (if the NOT cause) of my problems.

Iíll replace the chain this weekend, it looks like it might be fun and Iím excited to see what the car will be like after Iíve replaced the timing and balance chains.

The moral of the story so far, if the car does not start, or does start but has no power, and there are no fault codes, itís worth checking the chain.

    Final update

Timing chain replaced (balance chain, oil and drivebelt too) and fault has cleared.

The timing chain had stretched about 10mm in total (i.e. one link length), the long guide at the front had broken into 3 pieces and the tensioner was not taking up the slack.

The can now runs smoother, sounds less rattly and has loads of power again.

While driving it the spanner light came on, but I do not suspect a big problem and have already ordered a new scanner to see what the problem might be.

    Thanks everyone for the help.
