    Angry Blown up Engine

    Hi All
Any ideas on this. Just blown up my engine 2.0 DTI, started getting noisy a day or 2 ago then today on the motorway it got really bad and died with a spanner light on. Coasted to the hard shoulder and tried to start it but it turned over slowly for a couple of revs then stopped.
RAC arrived ( 1.5 hours later ) and when we turned over the engine it really banged the RAC guy said it was terminal and sounded like something in the bottom end.
What Iím thinking though is....... about 4K ago I did an oil change and used Mobil 1 are there any issues with this in a diesel? By the way checked the oil level and its fine.

The hissing noise is quite common if the EGR pipe on the turbo splits

As for the bang, I had that when an exhaust valve went, and ended up in the turbo

The only way to check is to perform a pressure test on each cylinder

    Angry

    Thanks for the reply.

Didn't hear a hissing noise and the banging noise sounds like a big end. the banging also seems to come from the bottom end. Thats why I wondered if Mobil 1 could be incompatable with diesel engins and caused bearing damage.

Still got a mechanic comming to look at it soon.

Oh dear, sounds like you may have had the timing chain snap 1st, but now the RAC bloke has spun it it probably has killed the valves as well.

Mobil 1 is a fully synthetic oil, acceptable in either petrol or diesel engines, although there is a diesel version
Providing the oil is changed every 5K miles (or whatever the service interval is) this would more than exceed the basic requirement

Timing belt failure sounds more likely (as above), unless this engine is on a timing chain
Check the service history, should be changed every 40K miles and include the rollers

Your 2.0DTi has a chain, it requires no changing unless you either want to or detect it's gotten too noisy, rubber belted engines do need one at spec'd intervals.

The oil isn't an issue, if anything you've over spec'd the oil, dedicated derv oil is normal oil with detergents added, so this shouldn't have caused it

One thing I do wonder is, when you did the oil change did you flush the engine 1st? and is the car high mileage, with flushing it should only be done if it's always been done, if you do it in a dirty engine, it moves the sludge around and blocks things up, which could be what has happened to the lube ports that feed the chain.

Cheers at least I feel better about Mobil 1 not being responsible.
Yes its high milage 112K. Had full Vaux service history up to 95K. I changed the oil at 109K, believe next service should have been 115K. I didn't flush the engine.
First & Last time I'll buy a high milage car, I was concerned before I bought it, but " friends " assured me a diesel would be good for at least 250K possibly double that.
Off to work now in the wifes Ford KA..............arrgg
