    Default job application

two weeks ago i saw a job advertised in my local paper, local council looking for a qualiffied plumber, i thought great ive been trying to get a job back plumbing for the past five years since getting laid off.
so to save time i downloaded the aplication form and sent it off. closing date was 4 may, with interviews today. and once again like so many times befor, they like so many, couldnt be botherd just to say thanks for your aplication but i havent got a interveiw.

your probably wondering why im writting this, it is just to say that if your a business, and someone writes to ask if you have any jobs going/fills in aplication form, just have the decensy to give a reply, if its just a "sorry not this time".

in the past five years i have sent a lot of letters to local plumbing companys looking for work, and in that time i have had one reply. ok it was to say he had no jobs going but at least he took the time to reply, whats it cost, a price of a stamp.

sorry to go on but just blowing off a bit of steam, even sent local council snotty email

I see your point matey, but if you were an employer and advertised a vacancy and got over 1000 applicants, would you send a 'no thanks not this time' letter to each and every unsuccessful applicant?

Send an e-mail or letter to the council asking for some feedback on your application; you never know, you may get a response that way.

Again matey, I'm totally with you on that. But I receive countless letters and cold callers asking for work or if they can sell me something. I don't reply to each and every one but I do keep a few on file as you have to admire initiative.

In my experience, when you do call someone back with a vacancy they're always in work and happy where they are.

Why not start up a business on your own matey. Then realy market yourself to estate agents and letting agents in your area. as an estate agent myself i know were crying out for reliable plumbers all the time, and we only manage a 400 houses and are not a huge company, so if were struggling to get plumbers to do our work, imagine the companies that have twice, or even three times the amount or rental properties to manage. just a thought but if you do start up then get ya self over to hull and come work for us, we need plumbers!!!!!

Know what you mean Steve, I am experiencing the same as you.

I think if you just send a letter asking if there is anything going, then maybe if not then they don't answer, but if you bother to fill out there application form then they shout have the decency to reply.

I filled out one for a school and put in a SAE for a reply and they have not even bothered to send MY SAE back???. How rude is that??..

I once sat and wrote about 30 letters to companies attached with my CV and i got all of 2 replies saying "no thanks". It's rather disheartening and makes you feel worthless. I eventually got a job through an older mate putting in a word for me.

I'd hate to have to find my first job these days, everyone wants experience.. how do you get eperience if nobody will hire you?? lol

I've been on both sides of this fence.

We advertised for 20 positions about 4 years ago and got 1600 applications.

Two of us sifted through them and after two days had less than a hundred that had been filled in to a standard that gave us any confidence that they may be suitable for the positions.

We've still got about 50 or so of them on file which we go back to if anything comes up. I'd remove any that were accompanied by a snotty email. Sorry.

We are lucky in that we are in the position where we have a dedicated HR department with a resource to cope with the Admin. involved. Many places don't. That's the cost. The time.

Getting hung up on firms not replying is a waste of energy IMO. Keep bombarding as many as possible with a well presented CV and short letter. The only reply that matters is the one offering you the job.

    Just my opinion.
