take it down somewhere where they can put the car on a bridge while it is idling... so they can check if the cat is doing it's job or if it has a leak... from there you can decide what to do... and if you have to replace it just get the cheapest replacement cat (pattern parts here we come) you can find and replace it...

Except the OP's car does not have this cooler as it's a Z18XE.

I've been lucky with any vec Cs I've owned with exception of my old 2.2 direct elite signum which had to have chains replaced, have owned a2.2 dti, three 150 cdtis, 2.2 direct signum, 2.0 turbo xp and a 2.8 turbo elite vec, superb car and had that two years which is a long time for me, depends what you are looking for I guess as they all have good points /bad points, buy a good one and enjoy it is my advice

My 1.8 XER uses around 0.25 litres per 1000 miles, I can't remember the spec but I did look it up once and it was well within, runs sweet as a nut and enough power for me although that ain't saying much . Sometimes wish I had 6th gear but I do get 34MPG mostly local driving. Plus I ain't robbing Africa of its Lithium and blowing up all that C02 building a new car.
