    Trim : LS/Life

    Engine : 1.8

    Year : 2004

Default The Darklord speaks to his family

Yes, loyal ones, the Dark one broke the frosty silence and put his foot down. At least, that was the plan...

"This car is falling to bits, I'm going to replace it with a 1.0 eco horror that falls over at the first pothole"

"But we like that car, it's comfortable!"

"Yes, but the raid tax is ridiculous for a 1.8, and the oil consumption has bankrupt me. And i cant park it!"

"But we like it...it's very comfortable and roomy. We don't want a teeny city car"

"Enough of this rebellion! I'll not have it! No more pennies being spent on the old nag - it has to go!"

"Ok, but as long as it's another Vectra..."

Can't a man be master of his own destiny? No? Ok, another Vectra it is then ...

    So my choices are:
1.8 - gutless and burns oil
2.2 - spare timing chain anyone?
2.8/3.2 - whoosh (behave and be sensible)
Diesels - lots to break and go wrong, no good for hort town work which I'll be doing more of.

Any opinions on your favourite engine?

I would suggest the 2.8 230hp version. I own one of those and I read on multiple places that the 230hp version doesn’t suffer (or suffers a lot less) from stretched timing chains. The consumption is quite good when doing normal speeds. Also reasonable when you gun it.

you'll find that every car has it's problems including any engine... i'd say get your money ready and get the nice red one that is up for sale from one of the forum members... xp2 full options and a show winner.. it's a diesel but looked after as if it was a very expensive diamond... contact @RichM for it ...

Perhaps a little boring, but what about just a newer 1,8?
It's (supposedly) the least complicated, and on paper has the best mpg.
I have a faceliftet 2006 1,8. Over a year I'm averaging 11 km/l, but I have a lot of short trips where the engine is only up to temperature half way through the trip. On longer trips it's about 13,5 km/l.
I haven't had any major issues with it. Broken spring and damper, front wheel bearing and ball joint. The traffic light stink and a failed a/c compressor. Seems like every-car-problems.
I would have liked the 2.0T, but that'll be another time.

Another vote for a remapped 2.0T seems to be a better choice than the 2.2. RichM's car is sick though...

Read up over time, they are all good and all have issues which are mostly random although the cdti seems more set up to fail until you correct the issues.
    2.0t 2.8t or a 150 1.9
