Default No Claims Bonus if you get a company car?

The wife got promotion a while ago and she now gets the option to go down the company car route. She does not drive but the deal is that family members can have full use it .

We are not going to do anything until next year (take the £s' and run mine as planned for a year) but I was wondering what happens to my NCB when I stop insuring a car.

I seem to remember reading something years ago that said the max time you can park your NCB is 2 years.

I was wondering if I got a letter when I finish with the company (Direct Line by the way) can I keep that as evidence. As I have lots of years NCB I would hate to have to start from scratch.

P.S. I have not posted for a while – great job on the options Duncan. All I need now is the spell checker to stop me getting my worbs wrong.

I had a volvo T5-R insured through Volvo. I stopped as got company car and sold the Volvo. I had a company car for 3 years.

Wrote to volvo when I left the job as I then needed to re-insure another car. they said they were happy to issue a letter stating that I had xx amount of NCD and Swintons were happy to accept it. I also had to have a letter from the employers insurer stating that no claims were outstanding during their cover period.

Volvo also said that if I chose to re-insure with them they would carry on with my NCD where I left off!!

Not sure how other insurers deal with the company car thing but Volvo were fine - didn't go with them however as swintons were cheaper, but still got NCD letter from them!

Most employers will give you a letter when you give up a company car -and most insurance companies will accept it as proof of NCB.

Agreed, done it with my cars. Not had any accidents in a company vehicle and the insurers were happy with a letter from my old employers to confirm as such.

I thought you might be able to carry forward any NCD from a company car to a new private insurance – I was more concerned that any NCD I had before moving to the company car would be lost.

My question was more that if I had say 15 years worth of traceable NCD (or NCB) with my present private insurance company and I move to the wife’s work insurance policy for a period of 3 - 4 years and for whatever reason I went back to a private insurance policy

I’m hopping that I could use a letter from my present insurance company (confirming the 15 years NCD) rather that the 3 – 4 years with the company car.

I suspect I would still need something from the company car insurance period to confirm that I had no accidents when I was insured with them.

    Hope that makes sense
