Default Turbo troubles and idle revving

    Hi guys,

So had an on going issue with my v6 3.0 vectra 54 plate.

It has the spanner light on since I bought it, and every now and then, usually after mid range motorway trip, I’ll pull off the motorway slip road and have a massive loss of power. The turbo cuts out completely and when the foot break isn’t applied or in gear it revs during idle (till around 1,000 rpm) and rarely revs excessively when in neutral (4.000 rpm). Apart from the motorway part, there seems to be no reason as to why it happens. It can take anything from one ignition off-on to a full weeks worth of use to come back, and when it does finally come back, if I floor it a massive puff of black smoke comes out.

I’ve tried getting codes read, but two garages I’ve taken to say it doesn’t have a log of a code, reset the light, but inevitably in a couple of days it comes back on.

    Any more questions/ideas?

    Thank you

I had the z30dt engine and 80% of the faults were down to the egr valve

I’ve read about these. Apparently cleaning them doesn’t work, they’re a nightmare to get to, and they aren’t too cheap either, is that true? Thanks for the heads up!

The trouble with the design is that the carbon bush that the valve goes in wears, then the soot from the exhaust gas blows by them and goes into the position motor that contaminates the potentiometer wiper feedback, so that the ecu references an incorrect position.
The valve can also stick partly open, but as the valve is not directly connected to the motor (it is sprung loaded) the valve can be stuck open but the motor feedback gives the ecu the signal that it is closed.

I used to get my mate to rebush an egr valve and keep it in the car, then after a couple of years, I'd have to swap the egr over and he would rebush the one I took off.

I have a new old stock egr valve I used on the car for 6 months that I took off to resell before I traded my vectra in. It still have the yellow paint marks on the motor.

If you're interested in buying it I'll throw in my spare egr parts so you could do the same. £75 with post and I'll put it up via ebay.

As a tip, you can't use a full egr blank or a part restricted egr blank on the z30dt engine as the egr flow is calculated and references by the maf. I tried it.

On the z30dt the egr is at the top of the engine underneath the engine cover on the left hand side near the air box. 30 minutes max to change, but note that the top nut stud part on the flexibility part, the stud has to be removed also.

Typical fault codes are of the P04xx range, and othere consequential codes such as the turbo actuator/ brake light switch/ etc can be flagged also. Engine revs at 1000rpm unless the brake pedal is pressed dropping back to 800-900 were experienced.

    Good luck.

If you live in West Yorkshire I'd swap it over for you.

Getting the fault codes is paramount to aiding diagnostics of your running problems. This engine is also subject to faults with the fuel filter/ fueling leaking in air at the fuel filter seal o r not bleeding the system after a fuel filter change, to suction control valves on the diesel pump.
Modified ecu software also reduced issues with fault codes on this too.
