    Default 2008 vectra C 1.9cdti 120bhp Gearbox problem

    Hi

I was driving earlier this evening for an hour or so and all of a sudden, I got a whirring / squealing noise when I shifted up to 5th. I get it less in 6th and a little bit in 2nd. I drove most of the rest of the journey in 3rd/4th as they seem to be okay.

I'm guessing the gearbox is toast, right? If so, I've a few questions:

I have a 3h return journey home to make tomorrow, am I doing more damage to the gearbox by driving this? Or once it's damaged, is it just damaged and driving more won't make much difference? Obviously, it could give up completely en route but that's a different problem.

Secondly, what's my best option for fixing this? Recondition the existing one? Get one from a breaking yard? Or something else?

    Thanks in advance

Not sure what gearbox you have but if it is the M32 box then the noise could be your bearings are gone. This link might be of help to you http://www.wgmotorworks.co.uk/repair...n/m32-gearbox/

Sound, thanks for that. It sounds fairly similar to what's described in that link.

One last question, would I be as well getting the clutch done at the same time? Or is that not necessary?

If your paying the labour to remove the box, you'd be daft to not replace the full clutch assembly inc. dmf in my eyes.

while gearbox is off you might as well bite the bullet and have the DMF and clutch changed at the same time

I had the same issue, carried on driving for around 40 miles and I lost most gears car was un-driveable.

Changed the box for another M32 which also started whining about 10,000 miles later. I also carried on driving that one and it covered another 1500 miles before I took it off. It’s luck of the draw as to how long they last after initial whining starts.

i gave up at that point and did the F40 gearbox conversion

Slightly off topic, but I had a Rover 620 Turbo back in the '90's and the gearbox started whining at about 65k, which was a common fault with that model due to the turbo's torque. The car became undriveable at 120k...
