    Default The Darklord watches Startrek

"She'll nay dae warpdrive Captin, the missin intake pipe is overheatin the dilithium crystals!"

Ah, good old Startrek, baldly going where no Vectra would dare. Not with missing intake ducting, which has always been absent in the Darklord's trusty steed. Thus, in slow traffic on hot days, it seemed that the warp drive unit wilted somewhat. Impulse power only, captin!

After an eternal wait, s suitable replacement appeared on eBay recently, and the piggy bank was raided. A 5 min job to fit, yes?

Er, not quite. Getting all the bits lined up, and connected together properly requires a contortionist. Has it made any difference?

Yes I'd say. The warp drive unit sounded a little more refined and smoother, which I'm putting down to a proper supply of cool air from outside, rather than scorching air from the catalytic converter. Its a reminder that engineers don't fit items to cars for nothing.

"Full Impulse power Scotty, and engage warp drive on my mark...what do you mean the warp unit is still burning oil?"

I actually laughed at this one, but i also read that you are still having a oil consumption problem, how much is it now?

A properly plumbed in air intake does indeed increase the smoothness of the engine. Eons ago I fitted an additional intake with the aim of squeezing another couple of horsepower from an already tuned engine, but an unexpected side effect was that the engine sounded much smoother even from idle. Of course when I reported my findings on here, 50 people jumped down my throat claiming that couldn't possibly be true and that they knew far more about how my engine was running than I did...

Well since changing to thicker oil, consumption appears to have reduced, but not stopped.

It's gone from devastatingly ridiculous to merely ridiculous.

so it has dropped significantly? well i got some news for you.... most of the 1.8 engines use a certain amount of oil not when new but after a few years, i think it is because the engines are in need of an overhaul (read, time for new seals, gaskets, rubbers and piston rings, nothing a complete engine gasket kit wouldn't solve) but because of the work involved it doesn't get done... and if yours is passed a certain mileage it probably is in need of it... some people on here have or had the same engine that never used a drop of oil so it must be ware and tear related...

My 1.8 is just about to reach 160,000 miles and probably goes through around a litre of 5W30 in 10,000 miles.

I remember back in the days of my youth I had a couple for Fords and they used to say of the Kent engines, "if it doesn't use any oil there's something wrong with it", although most of the time the oil used could be found on the ground underneath the car when it was parked up.
