Default z19dth block with a20dth head

    Hi there,

I have a insignia that has bottom end problems. I have been informed that you can use the Z19dth bottom end but you have to change the crank shaft pick up over has anyone actually done this. or is It just complete rubbish. I have gone down the scrap yard and I must admit they look the same but the question is ARE they !!!

I was wondering about this too, have you done it a602 and just how much modification is 'some' modification? Does the head need to be modified or is it things like fitting a mechanical power steering pump and other ancillaries?

I doubt you'll find anyone on here who had done it, just some people who say it can be done and some who say it can't.

I know a chap on another page who has put the insignia head on the z19 block and he had oil feed issues, but I doubt the z19 block would fit without serious mods inc remap due to the sensor differences. I doubt it would be worthwhile the later insignia had upgraded oil pick up etc this would be the better route I imagine....

I'm polish and our polish friends has done it on a few insignias already, I'll post the link here when I find it, pictures included in there, unfortunately you will have to translate it for yourself or ask if you struggle at some point

If using the Z19 block and A20 head, I could imagine that as long as the crankshaft sensor etc. was changed for the Insignia ones there wouldn't be too much problem with the mapping. There is only a 1mm difference in bore size and you would be using Insignia injectors and cams etc so I wouldn't think the loss of 100cc would pose a huge issue. The oil feed issue however might be a different matter, looking at the head gaskets they look identical except for two small holes, not having examined both engines close up I can't say for sure, but they do look about the right size for oil feed and I doubt the corresponding oil feed would be in the Z19 block given that the Z19 gasket doesn't have the holes. Maybe not an insurmountable issue, but likely to require some oilway engineering in the head?

As for the upgraded oil pickup on the later Insignia, the early Insignia oil feed problems are the whole point of this discussion for me, I quite fancy putting the bulletproof Z19 into a cheap dead Insignia.

You must be the only person whose ever described the Z19 as bulletproof (and I own one), to me its the epitome of italian engineering, full of character but tempremental and throws a wobbly for fun, though unsurprising that GM managed to make it when they anglicised it into the A20.....
