the only main problem is the boost hoses which can sometimes split, thou VX have made some re-inforced ones to cure the problems..

is it a bad engine??..no not at all.. like any of the current engine range things can and do go wrong with the diesels..with the current 'dog' seeming to be the 1.9 CDti..as some are great engines, but some are REALLY bad..

you get good and bad in every bunch, but is the 2.2 the worst.. no, not at all..i'd look at buying one..But just make sure that WHATEVER you decide to buy comes with a warranty to get you out of trouble should it turn out to be a bad one.

Is the 2.2 DTi a bad lump?

It's more refined than a Mondeo, it puts its power down very smoothly - no real turbo lag, unless you try and pull off a roundabout in 4th, then it'll struggle and protest a bit, It doesn't smoke as much as a Passat - even under severe provocation.

The engine itself is very good. The ancilaries seem to let it down.

As said before, the boost hoses seem to be the main problem, but I wouldn't mind betting most have been replaced under warranty, or a quiet recall. Mines had a new turbo, the new one is on its way out, it's making an awful sound now, but at the moment, it's still hanging in there.

A 2.2 DTi SRi, would be a good buy, a warranty is essential in my opinion.

Mine is going to be traded very soon though. There's no way I would try and sell it to anyone, I would feel too bad about it coming back!

2.2DTi is just a bored out 2.0DTi with a variable vane turbo. It's the turbo that tends to fail first. Otherwise it's a solid engine. Not as responsive on the throttle as the 2.0DTi due to the balancer shafts, but it is more refined because of them.

I love my 2.0DTi in the Astra, it pulls like a train from 1500 right to redline, does 42mpg constantly, and even runs fine on 100% biodiesel (at 80p a litre!). I've been running it 25k now, and other than oil and filters every 6 months it doesn't owe me a penny. The rest of the car is a different matter, but the engine is a champ.

Put it like this, I'd go for the 2.2DTi before a 1.9CDTi-120. Plus the DTi can be remapped to 150hp+ with a shedload of torque.
