    Default Whining Noise

Hi all, I've been getting a little concerned recently , I've started to experience a whining/whistling noise whilst driving along. I seem to notice it more when I'm holding a steady speed in say 2nd gear at perhaps 3000rpm. The noise seems to only be present at certain speeds/rev ranges throughout the gears, but i dare say it's there all the time, it's just i cannot here it as much. I can liken the noise to that as when you sometimes get interference from the alternator through your radio speakers if you've fit amps, you know how the whining is relative to your speed. The noise disappears if i depress the clutch and coast.

Hoping i haven't got gearbox problems, is there any other components that could be causing the above symptoms? What sort of £££ am i looking at?

    Cheers

    Russ

the pushing the clutch and it stops make's me think it could be worn gears in the gearbox. they would whine when under power, but when you dip the clutch the forces are transffered to the other side of the teeth so the whine disappears..the only good news is manual box's are cheaper than autos..

Get it checked A.S.A.P. Do the noise go when you put your foot on the clutch? Look at the post 2.0dti gearbox in this section i've just paid £1100 for mine after my flywheel went. had to buy a new flywheel, box and clutch. Hope its not but better to grt it checked now.

Not had time yet mate, I've been to busy to be without me car, had training courses at work etc etc. Its only a slight noise at the moment so hopeful nothing to serious, my Fiancee reckons I'm just been paranoid and to her it's just the sound a car makes. I know she ain't a mechanic, but on the other hand i am a bit of a hypochondriac when it comes to me car and noises

I will be driving down to London for a wedding in July so i definitely want to get it checked out for peace of mind, I'm just trying to find out when the noise is more prominent, i think its when the car/gearbox has warmed up a bit really, but you also need to be driving on a relatively smooth road surface to hear it over the road noise. I'm just preparing myself for Vauxhall to tell me they cannot find a fault.

I'll have to ask them for that in writing and then ask them to compensate me if my gearbox packs up

    Cheers for your interest.
