Crazy cruise control problem

I've recently had a fault on the gearbox of my preface 2.0T Design Signum sorted, with the clutch replaced at the same time.

Now cruise control only works in 3rd and 4th gears!

I've tested it exhaustively over the last couple of weeks and it's definitely as I've described it, CC won't work at all in 1st, 2nd, 5th or 6th, but does work reliably in 3rd and 4th.

Naturally the people who did the gearbox job deny all knowledge that anything they did could cause this fault. I've been though the Forum and can't see anything even vaguely like this problem, so has anyone any ideas on it?

While it may be a 'CIM' fault I have no idea what a CIM is so could you educate me please too?

Sounds like it's not registering that it's in gear... No idea where the sensors for this are located though, but I'm guessing it's somewhere on the gearbox.

Needless to say the gearbox repair people say there aren't any such switches, but that's a 'Mandy Rice-Davis Response'. ('They would say that, wouldn't they?')

The last time I checked I only have two Signums, I doubt I could afford an Insignia as well...................
