Well, whatever the reason behind it, the end result was another helpful forum for Astra owners emerged.

Not so sure it's a helpful forum; I had a quick look at it earlier and the first post I saw was someone saying the F40 gearbox takes 1.5 litres of oil when refilling. Admittedly I know fuff all about Astras and maybe there's a diddy version of the F40 they use that uses much less oil than the version in Vectras/Signums/Insignias, but if there ain't a different version then 1.5 litres of oil is a great way to destroy your gearbox.
