In the days before speed cameras (when we were young and a lot more stupid than we are now).
My wife's "dog slow" Mk2 Cavalier 13S could (and did) easily get well over 100 mph on the motorway, and still feel like it wanted more, despite only having a 4 speed box (F10).
The mk2 Cavalier OHC engines were deceptively fast and had a lot of poke for the time.
Amazingly smooth once you got past the 72 to 85mph resonance vibration band.
I guess that was helped by older cars being much lighter than their modern counter-parts.

Okay - this is not a bragging comment, but more a statement that an old car isn't always a slow dog.
If you want dog slow, try a Marina 1300...
Not a chance of getting over 60 mph on a downward slope with a tail wind.
As for getting old - I have now reached the stage of driving my Mk3 Cavalier at 70mph on the motorway and engaging cruise control.
So relaxing - bliss.

Or a Morris Minor - some "enlightened soul" </sarcasm> was agitating for whoever owns the IP to Morris to build a new moggie minor as its "all any normal person would need" and "far better than modern rubbish".....seemingly wasnt trolling either...
