Default Battery not keeping power. Big problems with starting.

I joined up here few months ago because I was having problems with the Vectra, and everytime I searched this forum came up. So I've hunted through a fair few threads of similar ilk, but going to ask directly about what's going on with my own car.

Had it for year and a bit. After about 5-6 months of having her, we got starting problems. Poor starting, not quite sure if it would start. Then nothing, dead. Got it jumped, took to garage. He saw it was a crap battery, changed it for much better one. Said to give it a go.

It didn't last long until it happened again. So bloke at garage said he would change battery again, and send that one back on faulty. He said it happens, may have been a duff battery.

So that lasted about same time before tell tail signs started up again. And we had to get it jumped again to get it back to the garage.

Tell tale signs were first off the radio would stop working, just not have any power at all. Then it would have a few hiccups when starting. We'd get random warning messages on the dash, like brake light bulb, and washer fluid. Then the start ups would get worse, to the point I didn't know if it would start next time I tried, until it would end up not starting at all.

So last time, only a month ago now, garage bloke kept it in and ran tests etc. They decided it was needing an alternator. So I agreed to go ahead with replacement. It wasn't cheap. He said take it away, test it, see how it goes.

Radio was back on. Starting was good. Car running fine.
Then in the last five days, it's been iffy. Radio stopped working. Washer fluid message has come up. And the last three days has been rough starting. This morning it wouldn't start.

(my forehead imprint on the dash now from head butting it in frustration)

Garage bloke has said bring it in on Monday. So we'll have to get it jumped again to get it over there. And he's going to investigate some more.

So, any clues? Any ideas? Any past experience that would help me with what could be up and what we're looking at next? Please. And thank you.

So he changed the battery first? than he decided it was the alternator? wrong of him to go that route... he should've done alternator first than battery because if you have a brand new battery that keeps getting completely discharged it'll soon stop working... long story short bring it back to him and ask for a new battery... it should still have warranty on it anyway... but basically this happens because the battery repeatedly got a bad charge or no charge at all...

if it happens again after he replaces the battery i wonder if he actually changed the alternator with the right one... higher amps isn't a problem but lower than what your car normally would have can cause the same problem.

Go to a decent garage and ask them to test the alternator. It's not difficult to pin point the problem.
Sounds like the bloke at the garage is total bell end, with due respect.

I love that expression, 'you're a total w anker` is made ok by saying with due respect at the end.

re. What Northpole said...Now, having pointed out the obvious, I get what you mean. Would it have effected it that much in that amount of time though?

Yus indeedy, that phrase does excuse all kinds of inappropriate sentences.
The bloke I go to see is a sound man, and has a garage with a good rep. I've dealt with him for years with my previous cars. I'm a little perplexed as to how my car seems to have duped them though. Maybe above post is right, maybe it needed a new battery again to go with the new alternator. Maybe that was overlooked. Which is of course annoying. Cost and inconvenience. Meh.

it depends on the battery and the temperatures it has to deal with also, I have seen this happen to premium brands Bosh, Varta and cheap brands like Excite etc...
the only car batteries that can take a beating that way are gel filled batteries like YellowTop batteries. And even if you do the same to them they'll at a certain point loose their ability to take a full charge .

I got the car off to the garage on Monday, with a jump start from a friend. It's been there since. Today I spoke to the garage and it doesn't sound good to me.
They have identified the problem being the BCM, and cannot find a way round it, yet. He's still working on it. He quoted a scary price of around £600 to get a new BCM fitted. Which it not viable.

We've talked about other solutions, such as removing fuse 31 when car isn't in use. Disconnecting the battery, when car not in use.

So, any advice on this please? Is the BCM something that can be replaced? Does it have to be new? Is there any other way round it? I'm kind of at my wits end at the moment. I don't want to lose the car, but with a repair bill that is that much, I just cannot go there.
All wise words and advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

you could get a second hand BCM from ebay, as long as it has the same IDENT code ( 2 letters ) which is printed on the BCM in big letters.

    Seen them for around £20
