    Default vectra gsi or not?

right my trusty cav gsi is soon to be binned in favour of something newer and hopefully more reliable the cav is great but as my mate says 'its like the millenium falcon fast when it goes but broken a lot of the time' and i have just got 5k insurance payout for an accident i was in! so what do people recon of the vectra gsi? i have test driven one which was very nice although i was in town and could not put my foot down! which year is best as i heard that the 02 ones had more goodies than the later ones! but what if anything is different? how many mpg are people getting? leather or not?
that will do for now don't want to bomard people!

Let me see if I got you right:
You have a cavalier, and it is not reliable?
If so you are the first cavalier owner I have seen to complain about reliability of his old cavy.
You got 5k insurance out of a car thats worth 0,5k? It is mainly because of you being in the car, for the stress and injuries, am I right?

With respect to the GSi, there was never a facelift version - only exists as a pre-facelift.

matreya - in reply to your questions...

The 3.2 is a strong reliable engine, their really isn't much that goes wrong with them so I'm not sure what experience your mate has had. One area where they had problems was if they had an auto box. See this thread for some more info.

You're right in that the earlier models had extra goodies than the later ones. I don't know off the top of my head which year had the best spec. Maybe don't get too early a model though, think it was 02 and maybe very early 03, as they had the 302mm front brakes and not the 314mm brakes that they later fitted.

To see exactly what year had what spec, have a look at this thread and you can download old brochures to see what had what.

I got to be honest, whilst i like the GSi, it doesn't stand out enough from the other models. The same stood for the Vec B which was just too similar to a SRi.

Or, i could just be talking out of my a-hole. Wouldn't be the first time!

TBF, although Cav's were bombproof, the GSi by nature was another animal, I nearly bought one myself in the 90's to cab in, but it was just too rich and I didn't think the gas factor would suit my job, anyway, if you have 5k to splash, I think SRi will be your bag, GSi although unpop due to costs, still retains value due to the DGAF gang who desire a proper motor.

I love my GSI, on a 02 plate with nearly every toy available. I see loads of SRI's but rarely GSI's. I travel all over the place and the consumption is 27.6 mpg which is not that bad for the size of the engine. Had a few problems but all sorted out like any other car.

The car is no rocket ship BUT it will always get you out of trouble if you need it to.

Having come out of a Cav V6 into the GSi , i would heartliy reccomend it to you..a bit heavier than the cav, so not much more quicker, but still a fun drive, and yes, the earlier cars had all the toys, so shop for spec and service history....
