Default EBC brake pads (Red Stuff) ...beware !!

Just a potential warning to other members...

Last week I had my standard VX GSI Pads replaced with EBC Red Stuff @ Demon Tweeks. Three days later, when I was reversing out of a parking space I heard a metallic "ping" noise. I then looked at my drivers front wheel and noticed the calliper retainer (sorry not sure of the exact technical name) was hanging loose. As I moved this to allow it to drop out of the alloy, another metal bracket fell to the floor.

I revisited Demon Tweeks on Saturday and they ordered and replaced with another set of Red Stuff. Before he fitted to the car, the technician showed me how this bracket should have been welded/riveted to the back of the brake pad. Fingers crossed, this new pair will not be defective. I just wanted to share this warning with anyone else, which may or have had the same fault.

I have attached some pics I took at the side of the road when it happened.

    Ian.

PS. I contacted EBC to complain, but they said that I would have to go via Demon Tweeks. God knows, what may have happened if I were driving at speed. On the other hand, Demon Tweeks were really helpful and actually sent two of their technicians out (I live 10 miles away) to take a look.

Good of Demon Tweeks to come and sort it happily. How do you find the red stuff pads otherwise?

Not the 1st time i've seen that clip come off the back of the redstuff pads....the failure of the coldrivet in the middle of that clip is why the antirattle clip came off..

To be honest, so far not too much difference although slightly sharper. I suppose I haven't really bedded them in yet though as I have only covered just over 100 miles.

    GSI3.2,

Does this pose a risk with these pads? As the ant-rattle clip is about 6 inches, could this not become entangled at speed.

You have me concerned that the same may re-occur, am I best taking them back to Demon Tweeks and going for another brand?

    Cheers

it will just clatter round inside the wheel, the turning force of the wheel will just bend it out of the way.. it'll make a mess of the alloy, but it won't seize the wheel..

and the clip falling off won't mean the pads will escape as they are held in by the caliper carrier as well... it just means that they will rattle and may squeal as well..

it's always best when fitting them now to just add a few small tackwelds to the clip to hold it on better than that one cold rivet..as i said, yours isn't the first one i've seen with the clip bust off..

just in the process of replacing mine. The new pads seem to have a meatier better formed rivet now compared to the poxy 'looks as if its been hammered on' on the old set..looks like they may have sorted this issue...ooh..and finally got around to painting my calipers..only had the laquer for a year haha
