Default Dealing with insurance co regarding write off

One of our vectras is i think going to be written off after doing a 360 and hitting central m/w barrier . We have spent alot on new parts this yr and i i've done all the work it was good for another 100,000 . So question is can anyone give me any pointers of how to go about getting the best deal we can when the insurance co get back to us. I'd like to get the car back either to repair possibly or strip the new parts for spares for the 3 vectra c z19dth we still run and then either try and sell the remains or unfortunatly get the scrapman in. Any help appreciated.

It doesn't matter what you've spent out on it. Basically you'll just get market value for it. i.e. what would it cost you to buy a similar spec vehicle from a garage forecourt to put you back into the same situation before the vehicle was damaged.

Look around Autotrader and the like for similar cars for sale by Traders, not private sellers. Do your homework. Try valuation websites too to get forecourt prices.

You should get first refusal to buy the vehicle back if declared a write off.

The insurer isn't under any obligation to offer the salvage to the policyholder, and indeed some companies refuse to do so because they have contracts with salvage dealers such as Copart.

Being realistic, any Vectra is highly likely to be written off if involved in any moderate or serious collision, given the low value of a mass market car that is at least 10 years old now, and some of them are 17 years old. Back in my days of being a claims manager I once declared a Mondeo a write off because a vandal had broken the front and rear windscreens and one side window. The policy holder wanted us to pay for Autoglass to fix it all and to be fair it would only have been 5 or so hours work for them, but it wasn't worth putting that much money into an old car, when it was cheaper for us to pay the policyholder off and then sell the salvage on.

My old Vec was written off last week. Son in law was offered £1000, it was a 2008 Design with half leather. I told him to tell them to p off. He had to work at it but eventually he was offered £1650.... Go on Autotrader and check prices. Tell the insurance co to find you a replacement at the price they offer. Beat them up as much as you can. Good luck.

Thats slightly reassureing .This is a 57 plate design z19dth auto so there harder to get hold of, but it just so happens i bought another 57 plate identical model from a dealer last week for 1600 and i thought that was cheap compared with what other dealers are wanting and with higher miles.

Car has been written off ,have taken a chance and bought salvage for £95 but haven't been able to see it ,will see what it's like when it arrives and find out if it can be put back on the road as haven't got full details from relation .
