Default Upper control arm - strange problem

I recently had fun changing the lower control arms (as described on another thread) and, along with the troublesome toe in/out bolts, I had to cut off the large bolt from that arm to the hub after the nut seized on it. Had a bolt in the shed that sufficed as a temporary replacement but got the proper replacement bolt yesterday so fitted it. After lowering the car back to the ground I grabbed the top of the rear wheel and pushed/pulled to check for play.

Was disappointed to find quite a bit of play in the upper control arm to hub joint. I reached through the wheel and could feel the movement in this bushing. (Note that this was before driving the car anywhere - it was just after lowering it off the jack).

So, I ordered a new control arm (with new bolts this time; I've learnt that lesson!) which was supposed to arrive today but doesn't look like it will :-(

Drove the car yesterday evening and checked for play again this morning. Strangely, there seemed to be no play whatsoever! Jacked the car up and lowered it back down again and the play returned but I'm sure it will be gone again after a short drive once the suspension has settled.

Any idea what could be going on here?

Still waiting for the new arm - so much for next day delivery! Have had the delivery charge refunded and apparently it should now arrive on Sunday (hmmm).

New upper arm fitted and no play anymore Could move the larger bush (ball joint?) within it's mounting slightly by hand once the arm was removed. Strange how it only showed symptoms of failure when just lowered off jack/axle stands.

Not such a difficult job second time around - quite easy really with around 500mm of extension bars to get to the inner bolt.
