Default Engine mount... has it failed

Since buying the car about 2.5 years ago the engine has transmitted quite a bit of vibration through the bodywork when idling at driving at lower speeds. I am on my 3rd front exhaust section due to the flexi bursting, so I suspected a worn or failed engine mount.

This morning I have removed the driver side mount to get create enough space to get the alternator out. How much movement of the centre section (the bit that bolts to the bracket on the block) is acceptable? It will move up and down over it's full travel with a bit of gentle pressure, but there is no metal on metal contact even when using two hands and as much pressure as possible. There are a couple of small tears in the rubber core but it is still essentially in one piece.

I'm reluctant to buy a new mount only to find it is the same as the current one.

    Thanks,
    Gary

I might have answered my question. Had no transport while waiting on the replacement alternator to be delivered so decided to go with the existing mount, as it would be easy enough to replace later if necessary.

Since fitting the replacement alternator, the resonance or vibration that has been there since I bought the car about 25,000 miles ago has gone. It must have been the alternator all along??

Probably failed pulley on alternator causing vibration. They are a free wheeling pulley which spins alternator on acceleration but allows it to freewheel when engine speed drops. They seize over time and can vibrate badly.
